Family-Placed Death Notice

CADE, Catherine Catherine (Kay) Woodman Cade passed away at Vanderbilt Hospital in Nashville, TN, February 5, 2012, at 1:30 PM CST. She is survived by Dozier Copeland Cade, her husband of 64 years, sons Dozier Woodman Cade and Sandy of Nashville, TN and James E. Cade and Barbara of Manchester, TN, four grandchildren, six great-grand children, and two nieces and a nephew. Born in Dover, NJ on Oct. 15, 1925, she was the daughter of the late Benjamin Smith and Rhea de Cordova Woodman of Atlanta, GA. She had one sister, the late Elizabeth Woodman Snell of Natick, MA. She attended high schools in Jenkintown, PA and Bethlehem, PA, and was graduated from North Fulton High in Atlanta as salutatorian. She received an AB degree in Journalism from the University of Georgia in 1947, where she was a member of Phi Beta Kappa, and an MA degree in English from Georgia State University in 1971. She also did graduate work at the University of Tennessee, where her husband was Director of the School of Journalism. Catherine Cade was a retired high school English and Journalism teacher and was a resident of Hilton Head Island from 1980 through 2012. She taught at Sandy Springs High School in Atlanta for many years and Bearden High School in Knoxville, TN. Her memberships included the National Education Association, chairman of the Georgia Education Association, National Council of Teachers of English, American Association of University Women, The Retired Officers Association Ladies, Women's Association of Hilton Head Island, Palmetto Dunes Club, Theta Sigma Phi Journalism honorary society, Alpha Phi sorority, Foreign Affairs group, Great Books group, and Page Turners book group of Hilton Head Plantation. She was treasurer and president of the Hilton Head chapter of AAUW, and treasurer of TROAL and the Women's Association. She was a Presbyterian Church Elder, taught Sunday school at the First Presbyterian Church on Hilton Head and was a Circle devotional chairman. She was a long-time volunteer at the Bargain Box and a poll manager for many years. She also wrote book reviews for The Island Packet. A Memorial Service will be held at 11am, Friday, February 8, 2013 at Hillsboro Presbyterian Church, 5800 Hillsboro Pike, Nashville, TN 37215. Guestbook at www.crawfordservices.com.
