JORDAN, Gladys W. GLADYS WHEELER JORDAN APPLING, GA - Gladys Wheeler Jordan entered into rest on Saturday, December 21, 2013, at Doctors Hospital in Augusta, Georgia. Gladys was born on February 27, 1918, the third oldest child of the late Mr. and Mrs. W. P. Wheeler of Andrews, Williamsburg County, South Carolina. She was married to James Thomas Jordan of Rock Hill, SC, and is survived by her only child, Gwendolyn Alice Hixon, of Appling, a son-in- law Rufus Hixon, a grandson Dr. Les Hixon and his wife Scot Ostendorf Hixon of Baton Rouge, LA, a granddaughter Alison Marchman and her husband Mitch Marchman of Evans, GA, five great-granddaughters Madison, Kate, Mary Claire, Caroline and Anna Scot, one sister Inez Linder of Bishopville, SC, and numerous nieces and nephews. Gladys and J.T. were married on December 26, 1937, in Andrews, SC. She received her Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts degrees from Winthrop University in Rock Hill, SC. After J.T. was honorably discharged from the service, she owned and operated a neighborhood grocery store near their Home and after receiving her Master's degree in 1963 from Winthrop, began a 25-year teaching career at Ebinport Elementary School in Rock Hill. Following retirement, she and J. T. spent much of their time at their second home in Highlands, NC, and later in Decatur, GA, where she very dutifully cared for J.T. during the final years of his extended illness. Her last years she lived with Gwen and Rufus Hixon in Decatur and later in Appling, as well as visiting her sisters and other relatives in SC. She was an avid reader, loved solving puzzles, playing bridge, sewing, cooking, and yard work, as well as being very involved with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She participated in activities of the Senior Adult Ministry of Kiokee Baptist Church in Appling, was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star chapter in Rock Hill and a longtime member of the First Baptist Church of Rock Hill and Highlands Baptist Church. Funeral services will be held at 11AM, Thursday, December 26, 2013, at Kiokee Baptist Church, Appling, GA with the Rev. Steve Hartman officiating. The visitation will be held one hour prior to the service (10-11AM) in the Kiokee Baptist Church fellowship building. Entombment will be next to her husband J.T. in the mausoleum at Westview Cemetery, Atlanta, GA. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Kiokee Baptist Church, Benevolent Fund, P.O.
