McCUMBER, Joan JOAN RUGGIERO MCCUMBER Family and friends lost Joan Ruggiero McCumber February 16, 2014, following a brief illness. Joan was born three minutes after her twin sister, Rita, in Nyack, NY, to Marco and Anne Ruggiero October 3, 1946. She grew up and was educated in New York State, graduating with a degree in chemistry from the State University of New York, Oneonta, June, 1968. Joan found her church home at the Cathedral of St. Philip (Episcopal), Atlanta. She served the Episcopal Church Women as their diocesan president and completed the four year Education for Ministry course. Joan represented the diocese at the ECW Synod and the national church's triennial meetings. She was also a member of the Board of Camp Mikell diocesan camp and conference center. Joan was the assistant manager of the Cathedral Book Store and became an integral part of that family at St. Philip. She was an active member of Saint Veronica's Guild at the Cathedral. Joan was also a member of and active in the Georgia Breast Cancer Coalition. All who knew Joan will miss her NY accent with fast comebacks and repartee delivered with sincere love and a giving heart; her keen sense of humor; her gift of nurturing-whether with a kind word or some of her incredible baked goodies. Joan is survived by twin sister Rita Garland (Ronald Klotzer) of Missoula, MT; brother Mark Ruggiero and nephews AnDrew and Evan Ruggiero of Palatine, IL; sister Mary Cicaloni (James) of Essex Junction, VT; and loving canine companion Asti Spotmante. A memorial service will be held at the Cathedral of St. Philip Monday, March 24, at 2 P.M. Interment will be in the Cathedral of St. Philip Memorial Garden. Family and friends are invited to a reception in the Gould Room at the Cathedral following interment. In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to the Cathedral Book Store, 2744 Peachtree Road, NW, Atlanta, GA 30305 or to Small Dog Rescue & Humane Society, SDR and Furkids, PO Box 191102, Atlanta, GA 31119 or www.furkids.org.
