Janice Hughes Obituary

HUGHES, Janice Tufts Janice Tufts Hughes of Sandy Springs and Lake Oconee, GA passed away March 6, 2015 after an extended illness. She was born September 17, 1935 in Norway, Maine, the daughter of Harold Leon Tufts and Bertha Sessions Tufts. She graduated from Edward Little High School in Auburn, Maine and from Bates College (Magna Cum Laude) in 1957. She did graduate work at Washington University in St. Louis and earned her Education Specialist and Masters degrees in both Elementary Education and Administration from Georgia State University. Her husband's work took her family to St. Louis, San Antonio, Atlanta, Tokyo, and Chicago before returning the second time to Atlanta. She taught in Ladue (St. Louis), MO and later joined the faculty of The Galloway School in Atlanta where she taught and served as Principal of the Middle School for 20 years. She was devoted to teaching. She also enjoyed many hobbies, including travel, golf, gardening, pottery, painting, Japanese flower arranging (Sogetsu Master)-and most of all, her children and their families. She was an Elder of the Northwest Presbyterian Church and member of the Greene County Country Club. She is survived by her husband of 58 years, A.W. "Nick" Hughes, by their daughter Kathleen Hughes Danforth of Sandy Springs, GA, and her husband David, their son Jason Danforth, her sons David Clegg and Cody Clegg-and by their son Thomas Scott Hughes of St. Louis, MO and his wife Laura, and their children Sarah Hughes, Taylor Hughes, and Zachary Hughes-and by her nephew Stephen Millett and his wife, Nadine of Leesburg, FL, and her niece Rev. Linda Hatch and her husband Michael of Ellsworth, ME-and her brother-in-law Stephen Hughes of New York City and by two stepsisters, Cleta Stockwell and her husband Ira of Westbrook, ME, and Dr. Gail Waldron of Ojai, CA. Visitation will be held March 13, from 6 to 8 PM at H.M. Patterson and Son, Arlington Chapel in Sandy Springs, GA. The memorial service will be held March 14 at 11AM at the Northwest Presbyterian Church in Atlanta, with a family-only interment following at Arlington Memorial Park in Atlanta. In lieu of flowers, contributions are encouraged to the Alzheimer's Association, Galloway School, or other charity of choice.

I was in the 7th grade at Galloway where they would cover all the subjects by the same teachers with exceptions. I never was at Miss Hughes´s class. But I came across her for conversations for a time or two. She loved the Japanese language as well as the culture.

we were always close cousins who enjoyed each others company. It was so sad to see what alzheimers did to a brilliant mind!!
