have known Ian's mother for a relatively short time, but the personal connection makes it seem so much longer...Ian and family have been in my prayers for some time now, and remain on my list. I see his name each morning and understand that the challenges are still being faced, tears are still being shed...hurt is still there for the loss of this loved one. Ian is not forgotten

Ian, it seems like everywhere I turn I'm finding picture of you. I turned into your neighborhood, and would ride by your house trying to catch you working outside, cause didn't want to disturb your resting. I without thinking started toward your home the other day, and had to turn around, it was hard to do. I miss you more than I ever thought possible. You are such a wonderful person, with so much to give. I love and miss you so much, and will cherish the memories of you forever.

Ian was a cool guy. We got to know him some when he attended Toastmaster for a while. He was talented, concerned for those around him and radiated a strength others could draw from. He set an example of courage for us to follow and left us too soon. God bless Ian and his family.

I knew Ian through the stories shared with me by Dorothy and Hadley, and through these stories I know he was an amazing family man and friend, who loved deeply and was deeply loved. Dorothy happily shared touching stories of joy, laughter, and courage with Ian and his lovely wife, Kristen. He faced this disease with strength and courage. I hope you can find comfort in your memories of a loving and kind-hearted man taken from this world far too young. Wishing you peace and comfort at this difficult time.

I never met Ian face to face, but I know him. I know him through stories Dorothy told, I know him through pictures on Facebook, I know him through what I read here. He was a young man, who faced one of life's greatest challenges with great courage. I know he was greatly loved and will be greatly missed.

It's rare you see such unconditional love, dedication and total commitment as seen with Ian & Kristen. I remember Dorothy saying "You should see them together, they both have that sparkle in their eyes". She was right, that sparkle never left and for the short time they had together it was perfect & fun. Not without the occasional disagreement, of course; but those only made their relationship stronger.
Stay strong Kristen, live your life to the fullest; Ian would want that for you! He may be gone from this earth, but he will never, ever be forgotten.
Love you always my sweet niece.

When I think back on Ian's life, I wasn't around him much as an adult, my thoughts go back to when he was a young, very quiet little guy that came over to our house for family gathering - Christmas, etc. my 4 guys were always excited, - Ian is here! Ian is here! and then the 5 of them were heading out in the yard to play some kind of ball or whatever was the Christmas present hit of the year, be it little match box cars to race, or some kind of ball.
Ian, your life meant so many different things to so many different people and loved by all of them! Prayers go up for all your family for comfort, strength during this time in their lives - Love you, Ian....................

My memory of Ian which most stands out is our backpacking trip, the first for Dorothy and Hadley. Ian served as our guru, and chose the perfect first backpacking trip location. Everything was wonderful. The hike in was beautiful, the waterfall campsite was perfect, dinner was cooked and enjoyed by all. And then his dog decided to play with a skunk. Then it rained, biblical flood type rain, and the boys tent leaked, as in the waterfall was inside their tent. but we made it through. Whenever someone asks me to take them backpacking for the first time, I remember that trip and think, "How bad can it get?" Ian was a very special man and I am glad to have this memory of him.

My thoughts and prayers go out to this family of mine for the huge loss of a great person. Regrettably I did not know Ian as well as I would've liked, but what I do know is that he was very loved and inspired all those that did have the privilege of knowing him. May all of the good memories of Ian bring you comfort in this difficult time. I love you guys and will continue to keep you in my prayers.

I will forever hold dear the time Ian and I overlapped at Auburn. Although we grew up together in Atlanta as cousins, Auburn allowed us to also share time as friends. The Born family was so fortunate when he and Michael joined. He will never be forgotten.

Though I didn't know Ian, I prayed for him for years. He has been on my mind every day since the diagnosis. I've lost two other young men to this wretched disease. The entire Sheffield family has been supportive, kind and most of all hilarious in dealing with this beast of an illness. I'm impressed by the strength and hard work by all of you to make Ian's life still joyous, still wonderful and still full of love.

It is hard to put into words how we felt about Ian. We didn't spend a lot of time with him but the times we did we will always cherish. Ian was a remarkable young man. He never complained about his condition or said why me. He just lived his life the way he wanted. He was such an inspiration to everyone who knew him. Rest in peace sweet Ian. We will miss you.

My favorite memory of Ian was the Warrior Dash with Ian, Kristen, Aunt Dotty, Jason and Crystal. I saw such joy, happiness and life in Ian that day. We all had good laughs together that day wet and dripping in mud. I am so thankful I was able to share in that accomplishment with him.
I will miss your gentle kind soul.

I was fortunate to have known and loved Ian, from the time he was a very young little blond headed guy, until he became a special, unique grown man. Ian always excelled at everything he did and loved
Ian loved Kristen with a passion I've never seen before. He loved his family, nature, music, writing and working to make their home and yard beautiful. He loved all his animals, I think even the turtles.
If I had to pick one memory that was my favorite, it would have to be when Ian, Kristen, Jason, Crystal, Dorothy, Kim and myself ran in the Warrior Dash-5K. We ran through rivers of mud, climbed over cars, under barbed wire, walked ropes and jumped through fires. This was just a few years ago, and I never saw him so full of life, dripping with mud, beaming with satisfaction that he completed it. I remember his wet hair blowing in the wind while riding in the bed of a pickup truck, that we hitched a ride with, back to the cars. I'll remember that picture the rest of my life.
He loved his family and friends, and was fiercely loved back. I love you Ian, and can't wait to see you again. You are always in my heart. - Aunt Beverly

I asked members of my family to send me stories and thoughts about times they were with Ian. I'm posting a few here because I believe that these small stories all paint a picture of how amazing Ian was and how much laughter and joy he brought to so many lives.
-Dorothy Sheffield
Here's one from Ian's Aunt Cathy:
I was up visiting with you & the boys one day & Hadley had made Ian mad about something. He said to me, Do little brothers ever get better & quit being so stupid? I said to him, Yes, they do. Your Dorothy is my little sister & they can totally drive you crazy." He smiled & said, I know Dorothy loves you a lot." I said to him and I love her so much too." He grinned & said, Then there's hope right?" I've thought about that a lot in the last few weeks
From his cousin Flo:
I remember the first time I met Ian. It was at Grandmother's place, kinda out in the country, close to Sandy. It was Christmas time and it was the Kuykendall Christmas get together. As I came into the house, I spotted this blond boy in a sea of dark heads. He was so cute! We went outside to play touch football and he came to play too. He was sooooooo shy but he hung in with all of those BIG Kuykendall boys! He had a cutting sense of humor which helped him fit right in with the rest of the guys. Glad I was blessed with that day!

At Night.
O LORD, support us all the day long, until the shadows lengthen and the evening comes, and the busy world is hushed, and the fever of life is over, and our work is done. Then in thy mercy grant us a safe lodging, and a holy rest, and peace at the last. Amen.
For Guidance
Direct us, O Lord, in all our doings with thy most gracious favor, and further us with thy continual help; that in all our works begun, continued, and ended in thee, we may glorify thy holy Name, and finally, by thy mercy, obtain everlasting life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

I knew Ian best through the stories and photographs of him shared with me by Michael, Dorothy and Hadley. I believe that Ian was thoughtful and thought-provoking, a writer, a gentle philosopher, a lover of nature, sports, family, and friends. He was a kind soul that cherished all that touched his heart. The earth was blessed by his presence. I wish his family and friends peace, rest, and joy in their memories of him.

7 years old. Ian was my favorite fullback.
