Edward WHEALLER Obituary

WHEALLER, Edward Osborne "E.O." For over 40 years, Edward Osborne Whealler (E.O.) has held the Georgia Tech record for the longest field goal kick55 yards against VMI in 1973. He was legendary in Atlanta's soccer and football circles for his powerful and accurate kicking and for his gusto-grabbing approach to life and sports. E.O. was a member of the Druid Hills High School soccer and football teams, the Hot Spurs soccer club in the early 1970s and the Georgia Tech football team 1972-1975. Tech football fans from that period remember kick-offs accompanied by "Eeeee Oooooo!" E.O. earned his undergraduate degree in Industrial Management from Georgia Tech and an MBA from Georgia State. He had a career in financial services, interrupted one year to work on a hospital in Saudi Arabia. E.O. died at home in Atlanta on Wednesday, September 29, at the age of 61. He was the proud father of Benjamin Edward Whealler, a current Georgia Tech student. He is also survived by his wife, Elizabeth Carter Whealler, his brother, John Anson Whealler of Cohasset, MA, and his sister, Susan Whealler Johnston of Berryville, VA. Donations in E.O.'s memory may be sent to the Alexander-Tharpe Fund of the Georgia Tech Athletic Association.

I have just learned of E.O.'s passing. He was a fun part of our big group at Tech. We all have such fond memories of our times there and E.O. was always part of those memories. To his children and wife, my deepest sympathy. He will always be remembered by us Techies!

A great teammate on the HotSpurs who was interesting and funny every single day. We had some fun no doubt and I still remember many shenanigans he led. Quite a character and we loved him.

...my condolences to the family of Edward Osborne Whealler.
E O was a teammate and friend of mine at Tech. He loved GT and took great pride in kicking for the Jackets. Everyone remembers EO's ability to kick the long field goals, however, I remember his long booming punts. It seemed like he averaged 50 yards/punt, but more importantly, his hang time was uncanny and resulted in very few returns. EO was a character and I'm sure all of us that played with him will never forget him.

My best friend, my teammate and my partner in shenanigans too numerous to relate. E.O. was one of a kind and his passing leaves a hole as oversized as his personality.

Somehow I always thought I'd see you again, man.

I am truly saddened by the news of 1 of my childhood hero's death. As a member of the 3rd Hotspurs team, and 2 years his younger, EO, my brother Tom, and the rest of the "older boys" on the Spurs were my mentors and my heroes. EO was a powerful guy and a damn good Yellow Jacket. So long, EO.

I was a teammate of EO at Tech. When he kicked off , the entire stadium would yell E O Whealer in unison. He was a cool guy
