Dana WHITE Obituary

WHITE, Dana F. Dana Frances White, a popular professor at Emory University for nearly fifty years, died in Atlanta November 24, 2016 from injuries sustained in an automobile accident. He is survived by Patriciahis loving wife of 25 years, dear friends, and scores of students whom he mentored throughout his career. Best known for his work as co-creator and narrator for the award winning "Making of Modern Atlanta," first broadcast on WPBA-TV-30 in 1991, White's teaching and scholarship played a leading role in shaping the public's understanding of the city's post-World-War-II transformation into a complex, multi-racial metropolitan region. Born in New York City November 18, 1934, White was Jesuit-educated at Fordham Prep and at Fordham University where he earned his B. A. in 1956. His love of sports was nurtured at an early age as a boxer, football player, and fan of the New York Giants. He traveled west to Laramie, Wyoming where he received an M. A. in American Studies. After serving in the United States Army, he continued his studies at The George Washington University, earning a Ph.D. in 1970. Combining his love of cities with his studies of urbanism, Dana taught urban history at the State University of New York at Buffalo and spent a year as a fellow at the Smithsonian Institution before coming to Atlanta in the fall of 1970 to teach jointly at Emory University and Atlanta University. In his adopted city, Dana prepared generations of graduate students to pursue careers as teachers, writers, and public historians. His work as a principal historical consultant for exhibitions at the Atlanta History Center from "Four Cheers for Atlanta" in 1976 to "Gatheround: Stories of Atlanta" in 2016 played a key role in illuminating the city's past. While Dana wrote persuasively on urbanism for his colleagues in the academy, he also reached the broader public through numerous newspaper articles, television interviews, exhibitions, and popular periodicals. In recognition of his accomplishments, Emory University named him the Goodrich C. White Professor. An able administrator, White also served twice as Director of Emory's Graduate School of Liberal Arts. After retiring from the classroom in 2011, White worked as a consulting curator for Emory's Rose Library where he joined his love of sports with his scholarship of American culture. Dana was Professor in Residence for periods in 2008, 2009, and 2010 at the American Academy in Rome, where, with his wife Patricia, he shared his interest in all things urban with international scholars. A celebration of the life of Dana White will be scheduled for a later date. Donations in his memory can be made to the Dana Francis White Fund, Rose Library, Emory University, Atlanta, GA 30322, or The Initiative for Affordable Housing, P. O. Box 855. As I continue to see and experience Intown Atlanta grow and thrive, I'm always reminded of Dr. White. Oh how I would've enjoyed sitting with him over a meal and gaining his perspective on where things are today. I miss my mentor and my friend. Today I was reminded of his passing. I continue to be grateful to him for him helping me to fall in love with my home.

Dear Patricia, I regret not observing with you Dana's first homegoing anniversary last month on November 24th, 2017. Please forgive me!

And please accept this prayer for our dearly departed brother found in The Book of Common Prayer:

"Father of all, we pray to you for Dana, and for all those whom we love but see no longer. Grant to them eternal rest. Let light perpetual shine upon them. May his soul and the souls of all the departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen." (BCP, p. 498).

I love Atlanta because Dr. White introduced me to her properly. That was over 30 years ago as a student at Emory. When I had the chance in the early 90s, I dug in my heels in Atlanta's Old Fourth Ward...and I never left. From the hidden nooks and crannies of Emory to Reynoldstown, Cabbagetown, Druid Hills, Inman Park...every neighborhood actually, he made Atlanta come alive in my eyes in a way that made me forever grateful. I have an appreciation for local politics, history and urbanism that was born in his classroom. I'll miss running into him around town. I extend my condolences to his family and friends.

I had the privilege of directing Dana in the documentary series, "Making of Modern Atlanta." Not that he needed much direction, mostly I stayed out of his way and let his exuberance and talent shine through. Dana was extraordinary in so many ways, an impressive scholar, a charming raconteur, a caring friend and mentor, and just an all around great guy. My deepest sympathies to Patricia and all who knew and loved him.

I will miss the exuberant smile and warm hugs I would get every time I saw Dr. White. He was so genuine and sincere. Heaven is rejoicing because it received an angel. I love you Patricia White, I'm praying for your strength during this difficult time.

I will miss his warm smile, love of learning, and most of all his knowledge of baseball. Dana was a true friend to me and I couldn't help but smile each and every time I saw him. I miss our long talks (sometimes a big gossipy) and just knowing he was always in my corner. My thoughts and prayers are with his wonderful life partner, Patricia. He will be sorely missed by all that knew him.

Dana was my uncle in the 1980's and getting to know him was so much fun. He was witty and had a sharp sense of humor.

A couple of funny things come to mind about Uncle Dana; he never washed his car. He said that rain was the best way to wash a car and that is was a waste of time otherwise.

Also, he would tease me about sounding "Californian" when I said, "You guys...". I thought that was funny coming from a New Yorker living in Atlanta saying, "Ya'all". I loved that he was transparent and spoke his mind.

I remember hearing how excited and passionate he was about launching the Atlanta show. He seemed so happy and had an incredible life. I am proud to be his niece. He will be missed.

Dana was a magnificent colleague, a terrific collaborator, a cherished friend, and a beloved educator. I will always remember his profound empathy for others, his formidable knowledge and his insatiable curiosity about people and the world--and his great sense of fun. Emory and the world are greatly diminished by this loss, but his vibrant spirit and memory will live on among his colleagues, his countless students, and his wide circle of friends. To Patricia, his devoted wife and partner, we send our deepest condolences.
