Family-Placed Death Notice

Mr. Walter S. Brooks died peacefully October 15, 2004 at 92 years of age. A native of Lake Charles, LA, he moved to Atlanta in the thirties. He was a vegetable oil broker with M.C. King Company and later headed the company until his retirement. He was active in the Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church in Atlanta, where he served as an elder for many years. Mr. Brooks was also active in the Christian Business Mens Club in Atlanta and in lay ministry to prisons. He was a generous and loving husband, father and grandfather. He was enthusiastic and energetic in everything he did, whether it was travel, business, fishing or golf. He loved poetry and language. A man of great humor, he loved both to hear and tell great stories, a trait which stood him in good stead both in his brokerage business and in his hobbies of golf and fishing. He loved being with his family and keeping them close, and they returned his love. Mr. Brooks was married to Anna Caldwell Brooks, his wife of sixty-two years who preceded him in death. He is survived by his children, Mrs. Catherine Brooks Baum of Jacksonville, Florida; Dr. Walter Scott Brooks, Jr. of Atlanta and Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Brooks Kuykendall of Due West, South Carolina; his grandchildren, Ms. Paige Brooks of San Francisco, California; Ms. Jennifer Brooks of Brooklyn, New York; Lt. Colonel Catherine Baum Gillespie of Fairfax Station, Virginia; Mrs. Elizabeth Benson of Durham, North Carolina; Mrs. Laura Ketcham of Raleigh, North Carolina; Dr. John Edward Kuykendall of Goose Creek, South Carolina; Mr. Robert Deaver Kuykendall of Atlanta and Mr. Brooks Kuykendall of Grand Rapids, Michigan; his great-grandchildren are Joshua Walter Benson and Zachary William Benson of Durham, North Carolina; Anna Michelle Gillespie of Fairfax Station, Virginia and Daniel Stephen Kuykendall of Goose Creek South Carolina. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, October 19 at 2:00 p.m. at Pattersons Spring Hill Chapel with Dr. Rob Roy McGregor officiating. Interment will follow at Prosperity Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Walter Brooks Scholarship Fund, Erskine Seminary, Due West, South Carolina 29639 or to Intercession for Israel 1715 Swan Road Wrens, Georgia 30833.
