Duane Darnold

Duane Bradley Darnold of Atlantic passed away Nov. 4, 2012 at the Cass County Memorial Hospital at the age of 80. Duane was born Jan. 13,1932 at home in Villisca, to Ray C. and Georgia (Spargur) Darnold. He grew up in the Villisca area, Duane worked for Eddie Weiner at the grocery store while he was in school before graduating from Villisca High School in 1950.
Duane served in the National Guard and then joined the Navy after graduating High School. He served his country from 1950 to 1954 during the Korean War. After being Honorably Discharged from the Navy, he returned home where he met his future wife, Carolyn Joann McKinley. Duane and Carolyn were married on Nov. 20, 1955 in Villisca at the Advent Christian Church. To this union three children were born, Dale, Tami and Lisa. They resided in Villisca where he was assistant manager at Hy-Vee until 1958. They then moved to Atlantic, and he began working for Colonial Bread. He then spent many years with The Borden Milk Company as a residential milkman before starting Darnold's Dairy and the Milk Store. In 1973, they purchased the local pool hall and named it The Pub, they operated it until 1986. From 1983 to 1985, Duane and his son also opened a sporting goods store named D&D Sports. Duane and Carolyn also owned and operated Darnold's Restaurant from 1986 to 2002 when Duane retired at the age of 70. His family remembers him as very hard working and honest business man.
When Duane was in school he was a talented athlete in track and his favorite sport basketball. He continued playing town team basketball and other organized programs after his academic career. He was a huge basketball fan, loved camping, fishing, hunting, traveling and dancing. He also loved and was a very talented pool player. Duane had a wonderful sense of humor, an ability to tell stories. He loved to play practical jokes on people.
Duane's grandchildren and great grandchildren were a great source of joy to him.
He will be remembered as a wonderful loving husband and devoted father and grandfather. He will be missed by his entire family and many friends.
Duane was preceded in death by his parents: Ray C. and Georgia Darnold, granddaughter Nichole Kay Darnold. Siblings: Barney Darnold, Johnny Darnold, Deloris Brown and Nadine Stein. Mother in law: Della McKinley Coy. Father in Laws: Dale McKinley and Charlie Coy. Sister in law: Betty Darnold. Brother in laws: Clifford Stein and Darwin Linn.
Surviving Duane is his wife of 56 years Carolyn of Atlantic; children: Dale Darnold of Cave Creek, Ariz., Tami Amos and husband Tim of Griswold, and Lisa Andersen and husband David of Atlantic; grandchildren: Brian Bintner and his wife Ashley of Sioux Falls S.D., Lacey Taylor of Buckeye, Ariz., Lindsey Van Horn and husband Dusty of Atlantic, and Taylor Andersen of Atlantic; great grandchildren: Brenna Bintner, Mikayla Taylor, Joshua Hass, Garret Van Horn and Dayton Van Horn; sister Martha Linn of Corning; sisters-in-law: Coral Guffey of Villisca, and Betty Darnold of Clear Lake; brother-in-law Merl McKinley and wife Joyce of Albuquerque, N.M.; many nieces, nephews, cousins and a huge extended family of dear friends.
Services for Duane will be held at 10:30 a.m. Nov. 30 at Wolfe Funeral Home, 201 East 4th Street, Villisca, Iowa 50864. Following the service, there will be a time for visitation and lunch at the Villisca Community Building. Memorials are suggested to the Duane Darnold Memorial Fund for late designation.
