Charlotte Ann Thorson, 55, warrior extraordinaire, died peacefully Saturday evening from complications relating to her battle with breast cancer.
The Guest Book is expired.
She was born in Audubon on Sept. 2, 1957 to Robert and Noreen Leigan (Christensen) of Exira. Charlotte's childhood was filled with family trips around the country, summers in northern Minnesota, and adventures with friends in "the boat." She graduated from Exira High School in 1975.
After high school Charlotte married Mark Madison and to the union was born two children, Heather and Ben.
Charlotte obtained her insurance license in the fall of 1982. Throughout her career she worked for various companies, but spent the majority of her professional life working for AFLAC, eventually becoming regional manager for Western Iowa.
In November of 1988, Charlotte met her soul mate and future husband Chuck Thorson. On June 10, 1989 Charlotte and Chuck were married in a beautiful ceremony surrounded by family and friends. They spent the next 24 years building a wonderful life together.
Over the years Charlotte and Chuck had many great adventures including memorable trips to Hawaii, New York, Colorado, and a house boat trip down the Mississippi where Charlotte was Tennille to Chuck's Captain. Some of the best stories came when Charlotte and Chuck decided to "just gopher it."
Charlotte was blessed to receive a second lease on life when she received an organ transplant on April 14, 2010. Full of gratitude for the gift of life she was given, she spent the next three years paying it forward to various charities and worked tirelessly getting the word out about the gift of organ donation.
Above all, Charlotte was a wonderful friend, mother, grandmother, and wife. Her biggest joys came from sitting around laughing and telling stories, being with her grandkids, and camping at Littlefield Park.
Charlotte is survived by her husband Chuck Thorson of Atlantic; her children Heather Lundquist (Jeff) also of Atlantic, Ben Madison (Kathy) of Adel, stepson Nicholas Thorson of Atlantic; mother Noreen Leigan of Exira; sister Mary Anstey (Dan) of Cumberland; brother Craig Leigan (Sharon) of Shenandoah; grandchildren Pammy and Sarah Fixmer of Atlantic, Christian and Carter Madison of Adel; nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her father Robert Leigan, an infant sister Vickie, her grandparents, and aunts and uncles.
A private church service for family is planned for Friday at 10:30 a.m. at St. Paul's Lutheran church in Atlantic. A celebration of life luncheon for anyone wishing to remember the life of this remarkable woman will follow, starting at 11:30 in St. Paul's fellowship hall.
In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to the Iowa Donor Network or a local charity.
