She spent her early years on the farm and then the family moved to town. During her four years of high school, Arlene played forward on the girls' basketball team. She graduated from Massena High School in 1947 and then attended summer school in Corning to receive her teaching certificate. She taught country school two miles east of Massena for one year. On May 1, 1948, Arlene married Gene C. Kluever at St. Patrick's Church in Massena. They lived in Des Moines, until April of 1951 when they moved to Atlantic.

She was an avid reader. She enjoyed square dancing, ballroom dancing and country dancing and travelled many miles in those pursuits, including nine winters as snow birds in South Texas. She also enjoyed browsing through antique and junk shops just for fun, looking for the perfect little treasure.
