Hazel Yourd(1915 - 2014)

Hazel Yourd

Loving sister, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, great- great grandmother and aunt, Hazel Genevieve Yourd passed away peacefully at her Oakwood Village home in Auburn. She was 98 ½.
Hazel was born in Girard, Ohio and grew up there with her siblings Howard, Edith, Marjorie, and David. Hazel loved singing in the Girard High School and Methodist church choirs, and she loved playing the piano. It was in Girard that she met the love of her life, Bryce Yourd. She and Bryce married in 1935; while still in Ohio, their son Wayne was born. In 1945, they moved to California, and daughter, Gwen, was born in Santa Rosa in 1946.
In the 1950's, they bought land in Fair Oaks where they built their own home and added a garden and fruit trees to the already existing almond orchard. They raised a few cattle and allowed Gwen to add many other animals, including a horse.
From 1953-1965, Hazel worked as a school librarian at Del Paso and Don Julio junior high schools. She loved working with the kids! Some of them have stayed in touch with her and written or said that she and her passion for reading/learning inspired them and made an important contribution to their lives.
After retiring, Bryce and Hazel moved to Christian Valley. They dearly loved their 7 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren and enjoyed attending as many of their varied activities as they could (now there are two great, great grandsons too). They also enjoyed traveling and always loved the outdoors. They enjoyed our Auburn community, becoming members of the First Congregational Church in 1975 and attending book clubs, discussion groups, the Auburn symphony etc. Hazel especially loved her ladies' organ group.
Our beloved Hazel is predeceased: by Bryce, her husband for 69 years, her son, Wayne, daughter-in-law Doris Yourd and oldest grandson, Michael Yourd.
