Martin Dale Taylor(1924 - 2014)

Martin Dale

Martin was born in Sterling, Illinois on August 30, 1924. He died peacefully with his family by his side on March 10, 2014 in Auburn, California. He is survived by his wife, Lita Taylor, daughter Susan Taylor, sons David (Sarah) and Steve (Tina) Taylor, grandchildren Megan Gulley, Sarah and Josh Taylor. He was preceded in death by his daughter Patty and his brother Wes. Martin loved his family dearly, cherished his grandchildren, and treasured his friends.
At the age of 5 Martin moved to Venice, California. During World War II he served as an MP in the Air Force in Italy. After the war he attended Santa Monica City College and then UCLA on the GI bill. Martin and Lita were married in 1947 in Santa Monica. Martin was a teacher and administrator in Downey, Calif. until 1959. He was then hired as a school psychologist and later as a school administrator in El Dorado County. He and Lita moved to Auburn in 1963 when he was hired by Sierra College as Assistant Dean of Students, eventually becoming Assistant Superintendent, Dean of Counseling and Student Personnel Services. He retired in 1984.
Martin was active in Toastmasters and the Sunset Whitney Rotary, of which he was a charter member and past president. After retirement, he taught computer classes at Sierra College and spent many years volunteering at Foothill Volunteer Center (now Seniors First), as a leader of Great Books, and as Chair of the Sierra College Retirees Health Benefits Committee. He was an active member of First Congregational Church of Auburn: singing in the choir, serving on various boards, and as vice moderator.
Martin was a lifelong learner. He wrote "I have been a student all of my life. Reading is almost a passion with me". Martin loved music; he said "music is the language which speaks to the soul". He played the violin and sang in the choir. Martin also had a keen sense of humor carrying jokes in his wallet.
There will be a Celebration of Life for Martin on March 23, 2014 at First Congregational Church of Auburn at 12 p.m. In lieu of flowers the family asks that you make donations to one of the following: Sierra College Foundation (5000 Rocklin Road, Rocklin, Calif. 95677) or Seniors First (11566 D Ave, Auburn, Calif. 95603).
