Charles Emilio
Pontes
12/25/1923 - 11/17/2013

Charles peacefully joined his wife, Erma of 62 years, in heaven on November 17, 2013 at the age of 89. Charles was born in Sacramento, California to Carlos Emilio and Maria Alexandria Pontes, both immigrants of Portugal. After moving to Newcastle with his parents as a young boy, he attended Gold Hill School and worked for many years on his parent's fruit orchard. He later joined and served two years in the Army during World War II.
After meeting and marrying the love of his life, Charles and his wife, Erma, settled in Newcastle next to the family ranch and fruit orchard where he and his wife built their own home and raised their three children, Sandra, Toni and Steve. Charles and his wife instilled strong family values in their children and turned a house into a home where many loving and memorable events took place. Charles was a self-made man who strived with integrity to provide for his family, sometimes holding down more than one job at a time. After working at Aerojet for many years, he then went to work for McClellan Air Force Base where he retired in 1988. Charles had a wealth of friends and family that loved him very much as he did them. He was a wonderful story teller and a man who could impart very wise information and advice. Charles will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him. His family finds strength in knowing that he lived a good life and is now in his final resting home, heaven.
Charles was preceded in death by his wife, Erma, and daughter Sandra Kay Thavenet in 2003, his parents, sisters Julia Barroca and husband Tony, Mary Brazil and husband Joseph.
A Devoted husband and father, Charles is survived by his two sisters, Helen (Bob) Hutchison of Auburn, Calif., and Celeste Price of Citrus Heights, Calif.; daughter, Toni Conners and husband Gary of Orangevale, Calif.; son, Steven Pontes and wife Kathy of Lincoln, Calif.; and son-in-law, Earle Thavenet of Roseville, Calif; seven grandchildren: Michelle (Karl) Kalista of Rocklin, Calif., Janel (Jason) Alger of Georgetown, Calif., Blake (Katie) Conners of Antelope, Calif., Chad Conners of Los Angeles, Calif., Trent (Melissa) Thavenet of Carmichael, Calif., Mindy Epps of Roseville, Calif., and Dale Smith of Lincoln, Calif.; and five great-grandchildren: Kali and Jason Epps, Macayla, Mason and Brooke Conners.
Services include a private family graveside, and a memorial service/celebration of life will be held in January 2014. The date, time and location will be announced in the newspaper at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, Charles had requested that donations be sent to the to whom he had donated for many years. May the lives of all he knew and touched be blessed. A special thank you to Lincoln Hills Community Church congregation and all the pastors, especially Pastor Jean, for their ministry and fellowship, and Bobbi Facha for bringing comfort and companionship into the final years of Charles' life.
