We are saddened to announce the loss of our beloved Husband, Father, Grandpa (Papa), and friend to many. Donald Walton Smith 86 passed away on March 15, 2013 after a short illness. Don was born November 7, 1926, in Grass Valley, at home, to Albert Smith and Alice (Swing) Smith (who became proprietors of Smith Radio & Electric at 818 Lincoln Way in Auburn for many years). He graduated from Placer High in 1944, enlisted in the Navy and served in World War II, came home and attended Sierra College. Don worked at McClellan Field before being accepted in the California Highway Patrol in 1954. He served in Ventura for 20 years before returning to the Nevada City area after retirement. He enjoyed spending his retirement woodworking, fishing, reading and always offering to help whomever and wherever was needed.
Donald is preceded in death by his parents, and brothers, Ernest and Albert and sister Veda Fulkerson and son-in-law, Michael Fair. Survived by his sisters, Rosemarie Warwick and Allene Wallace. He also is survived by his wife of 63 years, the love of his life, Gloria Hughes Smith, also a Auburnite. He had three daughters born in Auburn; Lynnda, Debi and Karen and one born in China; Doreen. seven grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren. He also leaves behind many relatives and friends.
A private Celebration of Life will be at a later date. Memorial Contributions may be sent to the CHP Widows and Orphan's Fund.
