Funeral services for Betty J. Newell, 88, of DeKalb, Ill., will be held at 4 p.m. Friday, Nov. 21, at DeKalb Wesleyan Church, 1115 South Malta Road, DeKalb, Ill., with the Rev. Dean Pierce officiating. Graveside services and burial will be at 11 a.m. Dec. 6 at Maple Grove Cemetery in Audubon.
Betty Jean Newell was born April 24, 1926, in Audubon, the daughter of Harold V. and Elsie C. (Elmquist) Andersen, and died Monday, Nov. 17, 2014, at Oak Crest DeKalb Area Retirement Center.
Betty grew up on her parents' farm with her younger brothers, playing school with them, which they thanked her for many years later, even though they tired of it when they were kids.
She received two years of "normal training" during high school and taught in a one-room schoolhouse in Audubon for two years, and then four years in Ames, before becoming a wife and mother and teaching her two daughters. She loved playing ball and board games with them and taking them to the zoo.
Betty married Darrell E. "Willy" Newell on June 8, 1947. They were married 64 years, until his passing in 2010. For the first year of their marriage, she commuted every Friday night by bus from her teaching job to Omaha, Neb., where Willy was studying for his doctorate.
When she moved to DeKalb, she became a member of the Wesleyan Church, and moved in 2011 to Oak Crest, where she made many friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Willy; and daughter, Cyndia Depre.
She is survived by her daughter, Kathy (Harold) Worby of Wheaton; grandson, Brandon; great-granddaughter, Kayla; son-in-law, John Depre of Coon Rapids, Minn.; brothers, Darrell "Arch" (Violet) Andersen and Harold "Bud" (Darlene) Andersen; and several nieces and nephews.
