Bruce was baptized and confirmed at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church in Audubon. He attended Exira Community Schools graduating with the High School Class of 1972.
On May 1, 1971, he was united in marriage to Jeanne Miller at the Ebenezer Lutheran Church west of Audubon. Five children: Justin, Chris, Shandy, Ben, and Tim were born to this union. He was employed as a farm hand for his Uncle Tom Nelsen for a few years before they made their home in Elk Horn. He then was employed by Ronald Liestad where he helped him farm and constructed grain bins. They moved northeast of Kimballton where he then helped his father-in-law on the farm and milked dairy cows. In 1983, they made their home on Jeanne's family farm where they currently reside. For several years Bruce raised rows crops and continued to milk dairy cows and in 2001 started a cow/calf operation known as the Nelson Beef Farm.
