Celebration of Life Services for Clara D. Mayer, were held at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, Sept. 23, 2009, at the St. John Lutheran Church in Clarksville with Pastor David Nelson officiating. Casketbearers were Pat Acton, Brant Mayer, Chad Hoffman, Piper Hoffman, Beryl Wubbena, Jordan Camizzi and David Mayer. Honorary Casketbearers were Clara's Grandchildren and Great-grandchildren. Burial was in the Butler Center Cemetery in rural Allison. Redman-Schwartz Funeral Home in Clarksville, is in charge of arrangements.
Clara Dena Hermina Mayer, age 98 and 363 days, of Clarksville, Iowa, was born Sept. 22, 1910, the daughter of John and Elesa DeBower Lubben at home south of Allison in Butler County, Iowa. Clara was Baptized at Vilmar and Confirmed at St. John Lutheran in Clarksville. She received her education in a country school near her home.
Clara was united in marriage with George Mayer on April 6, 1930, in St. John Lutheran Church, Clarksville, Iowa. The couple first made their home on a farm west of Clarksville, one of several places in that area on which they farmed, then farmed two years east of Clarksville. In 1962, they moved into the town of Clarksville. Clara worked for seven years at Wilken Grocery, for 2 ½ years at the Café and for 5 ½ years at the nursing home. After 1958 she worked part time for seven years at Martin Drug Store. Clara retired in 1980 and moved into the Retirement Village in Clarksville in 1982.
Clara was a member of St. John Lutheran Church for over 70 years where she was active in the women's circle and helped with mission quilting. She was also a member of the U&I Club and the Rebekah Lodge. Clara spent time sewing, knitting and making quilts. She enjoyed cooking, gardening and playing cards. She especially enjoyed traveling and visiting her grandchildren.
Clara died Sunday, Sept. 20, 2009, at Community Nursing Home in Clarksville, Iowa, of natural causes.
She was preceded in death by her husband, George Mayer in November, 1979 and three brothers, Francis, Ed and Martin Lubben.
Clara is survived by two sons, James (Marge) Mayer, Coralville, Iowa and Paul (Janet) Mayer, Charlotte, N. C. and one daughter, Carole Jean (Robert) Hoffman, Audubon; one sister, Gladys Wubbena, Allison, Iowa; nine grandchildren, April (Pat) Acton, Kelly (Deb) Mayer, Melody (Rob) Brennenam, Brant (Mary) Mayer, Chad Hoffman, Piper Hoffman, Wendi Mayer, Heidi Barstow, David (Michelle) Mayer;17great-grandchildren, Erica, Tara & Brennan Acton, Jeremy, Matthew & Zachary Mayer, Jordan & Emily Camizzi, Jacob & Iris Mayer, Chase & Sydney Hoffman, Nicole & Samantha Merritt, Shelby, Kayla & Bryce Barstow. and three great-great grandchildren, one sister-in-law, Evelyn Mayer, Racine, Minnesota; and a special niece, Sandra Lebeck, Clarksville, Iowa.
