The Guest Book is expired.
Dale was born on March 4, 1920 to Merritt and Tilda Root on a farm near Audubon, and passed away on March 17, 2015.
After graduation from Audubon High school in 1936, he rented some ground and set up his own farming operation. In 1942, he sold his farming equipment and enlisted in the Army Air Corps. He became a pilot and flew C-46 cargo planes throughout the South Pacific during WWII. After his military service, he returned to Audubon where he became a partner in Southwest Iowa Real Estate Company. There he specialized in farm sales and management. He bought and sold several farms and has owned farm land in Guthrie County since the early 1980s. Dale married Dora Miller of Audubon in June of 1948. The couple raised three sons; Roger, Clark, and Neil. Dale was active in community affairs, held various positions at the United Methodist Church, and was an adult leader with Troop 103 of the Boy Scouts. He and Dora were very active in their sons sporting events attending countless football games, wrestling matches, and track meets. Summer vacations were spent fishing in Minnesota, camping in the Black Hills, and visiting relatives in Michigan and Virginia. Members of Dale's 6th Combat Cargo Squadron began holding reunions in 1955 starting in Chicago. The group met seventeen times at various locations across the United States until the final meeting in 2004. Dale was one of only a few that attended every reunion.
In 1984, Dale and Dora moved to Sun City, Ariz., where they enjoyed golf, travel, and volunteer work. Although he had spent 25 years as a realtor, Dale would tell people he met that he was just a retired farmer. In 1999, they moved to a retirement home in Sun City West, Ariz., and continued to stay active until 2007 when Dale developed Alzheimer's. He participated in several research studies on the disease and upon his death, donated his body to Sun Health Research.
Dale is survived by his loving wife Dora; his sons Roger (Angie) of Lincoln, Neb.; Clark (Karen) of Sun City West, Ariz.; Neil (Young Hee) of Lincoln, Neb.; eight grandchildren Travis (Samantha), Arlen (Catherine), Alice, Loy, Seth, Kylie, Elijah, and Taylor; two great-grandchildren Landry and Avilyn; his sister Arlene Raub of Audubon, and brother Dallas (Pat) of Des Moines; numerous nieces and nephews other relatives and friends.
