Darrell E. Newell
Darrell E. "Doc" Newell, 84, of DeKalb, Ill., passed away, Saturday, Dec. 25, 2010 at his home surrounded by his family.
Born Sept. 24, 1926 in Audubon, to Ralph and Margaret (Williamson) Newell, he married Betty Jean Anderson June 8, 1947.
Darrell attended school in Audubon, first at Leroy Number 5, then Audubon High. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in electrical engineering at Iowa State University in Ames, a Master's of Science in electrical engineering at University of Iowa in Iowa City, and a Ph.D. in electrical engineering at University of Iowa. His Master's thesis was "The Effect of High Pressures on the Conductivity of Tin, Antimony and Bismuth Films.". Darrell's Ph.D. thesis was "The Characteristics of Quartz Crystal Resonators at Cryogenic Temperatures." He enlisted with the Army Paratroopers and served in the 101st and 82nd Airborne Divisions. While earning his college degrees he was employed by Collins Radio Company, later he worked at the University of Iowa, Bendix Corporation, Newell Laboratories, CTS Knights Corp. and was a professor and chairman of Electrical Engineering at Northern Illinois University . Darrell was active in several professional organizations, frequently wrote articles and scientific papers for technical publications, received many awards, including the Cady, and has numerous patents. He was known as the father of TCXO Engineering. Darrell was a member of the Wesleyan Church of DeKalb.
He is survived by his wife, Betty; his daughters, Cyndia (John) Depre of Coon Rapids, Minn. and Kathy (Harold) Worby of Wheaton, Ill.; his grandson, Brandon; and his great- granddaughter, Kayla.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
The funeral service was held on Wed., Dec. 29 at Wesleyan Church of DeKalb, with the Rev. Dean Pierce officiating. Graveside services will be held at 11:30 am Saturday, Jan. 22, 2011 at Maple Grove Cemetery in Audubon, Iowa.
