Donald Lee Lewis, 90, passed away March 28, 2015 at Trinity Center in Des Moines. Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, April 1 at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Des Moines. Visitation was held one hour prior to the funeral. Interment with military honors by VFW Post 4119 followed the service at Maple Grove Cemetery in Audubon.
Don was born on May 25, 1924, the son of Ralph and Alma Lewis of Cumberland. After graduating from Cumberland High School in 1942, he entered the U.S. Navy and served for 2-1/2 years at a naval hospital in Honolulu. He began a career with the Iowa Department of Transportation in 1954.
He met Harriet (Jespersen) Burns, a widow who had three young children in Audubon, and they were married in 1960. They moved to Des Moines, where they settled down and raised their children.
Don retired as a sergeant from the Iowa DOT in 1986 after 32 years of service. During this time, he graduated from the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy, and in 1979 he was awarded the Ralph Witcher Memorial Award for Outstanding Service to the Iowa Department of Transportation. He was a member of the Iowa Peace Officers Association, and Prince of Peace Lutheran Church. He enjoyed gardening, fishing, hunting, travelling with friends and spending time with his family.
Preceding him in death were his parents and his younger brother, Loyd Lewis.
Survivors include his wife Harriet; children Linda Burns-Fuller and Doug Fuller of West Des Moines; Becky Burns of Dexter; Mark and Julie Burns of St. Louis, Mo. Granddaughter Monica Burns of St. Louis, Mo.; Step-Grandchildren Heather Tupper of Sydney, Australia; and Sara Kaplan of St. Louis, Mo.; and Step-Great Grandchild Melanie Kaplan of St. Louis, Mo.
Don's family is especially grateful to friend and neighbor Don Wade for his help and loving care.
