Dr. Judith K (Hill) Payne

Dr. Judith K. Payne passed away Saturday, October, 8th 2016 in Durham, N.C.
She was born in Exira, daughter of Louis and Margaret Hill.  She lived in Iowa City for many years advancing her career in nursing and raising her three children. A devoted single mother, Judy tirelessly worked to put herself through school while raising three children. She was always there to provide whatever was needed to advance the lives of her children and those around her.
Judith was a scholar, educator, and most importantly an oncology nurse. She completed her BSN, MA and PhD from the University of Iowa.  Her expertise was in oncology nursing.  She was dedicated to patient care and nursing research in patients with cancer.  She held leadership positions at the University of New Mexico Cancer Research & Treatment Center, MD Anderson Cancer Center and was the past Director of Nursing Research and Evidence-Practice, University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics, Madison, Wisconsin. She also held faculty appointments at the University of Iowa, College of Nursing, Duke University School of Nursing and the University of Michigan.  Dr. Payne's work has been supported through Sigma Theta Tau International, the National Institute for Nursing Research, and the Oncology Nursing Society Foundation. She previously served as the Coordinator of the Advanced Nursing Research Special Interest Group now ONS Communities and was the editor of Current Trends in Oncology Nursing published in 2012. Dr. Payne was inducted as a fellow in the American Academy of Nursing in 2013 and was the current Co-Chair of the Academy's Health Behavior Expert Panel.
Judith is preceded in death by her parents Louis and Margaret Hill, her brother Larry Hill and sister Beth Olsen.
Judith is survived by her three children; Rachelle (Imed) Benzarti of Clearwater, Fla, Chad (Rosanne) Payne, of Tiffin, and Chris Payne of Scottsdale, Ariz.; five grandchildren, Sophia, Clarissa of Clearwater, Fla., Samantha, Treasure Island, Fla., Laken, Minneapolis, Minn., and Nicholas, Tiffin; her sister Jane (Larry) Jessen of Exira, and many nieces and nephews.
