Funeral services for Edna Jayne Petersen, 86, were conducted by Pastor Alan Finestead on Thursday, August 20, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. at the Exira Christian Church in Exira. Interment was in the Exira Cemetery. Casket bearers were Mitch Johnson, Mark Johnson, Mike Johnson, Dave Tessman, Craig Wiskus, Dr. Frank Dunham, and Marty Mikkelsen. Kessler Funeral Home in Exira was in charge of the arrangements.
Edna Margarete Jayne Petersen, the daughter of Frederick Christian and Egidia Hansen Sorensen, was born Dec. 18, 1922, at her parents' home in rural Shelby County near Rourbeck, Iowa, and died Aug. 17, 2009, at the Exira Care Center in Exira, at the age of 86 years, 7 months, and 29 days.
Edna was baptized and confirmed at the Exira Evangelical Lutheran Church in Exira. She attended Exira Community Schools, graduating with the High School Class of 1940. She then worked for a short time.
On June 4, 1941, she was united in marriage to Lee Jayne in Maryville, Mo. Four daughters Mary, Cleone, Verley, and Marilyn were born to this union. They owned and operated their farm east of Exira in Greeley Township for many years. Edna helped Lee farm. During this time she was also a Bible School Director at the Exira Lutheran Church and a 4-H leader. Edna transcribed numerous books into Braille with a Braille writer for the Iowa Commission for the Blind for many years. Lee died Aug. 25, 1978. Edna moved into Exira. She enjoyed making quilts for her family and making lap robes for the nursing home.
On April 29, 1984, she married Floyd Petersen at the Brayton Baptist Church in Brayton. They lived on Floyd's farm in rural Atlantic. Floyd died on Oct. 10, 1999. Edna returned to Exira and continued to make quilts and other items for the nursing homes. She enjoyed her home, then moved to the Exira Care Center in the fall of 2004.
Preceding her in death, in addition to her husbands, were her granddaughter Tammy Melendez; her brothers and sisters: Iona and Wilbur McCoy; Marion Sorensen; Floyd and Lorene Sorensen and Wayne Sorensen.
Survivors include her daughters and their spouses: Mary and Delbert Andersen of Exira; Cleone and Duane Tessman of Audubon; Verley and Roger Johnson of Exira; Marilyn and Roger Jones of Clarinda; her grandchildren: Sally and Dr. Frank Dunham of Norwalk; Leanne and Craig Wiskus of Exira; Dave and Darcy Tessman of Audubon; Mitch and Kim Johnson; Mark and Carol Johnson; Mike and Gina Johnson, all of Brayton; Angela Thuman and Ashley and Marty Mikkelsen, all of Shenandoah; her great-grandchildren: Natalia Melendez of Norwalk; Amanda Sunberg of Brayton; Melissa Sunberg and Matthew Sunberg, both of Exira; Derek Tessman, Bryce Tessman and Tyler Tessman, all of Audubon; Nickolas Johnson; Eric Johnson and Aaron Johnson; Anna Johnson and Abby Johnson, all of Brayton; Ariel Petersen and Olivia Mikkelsen, both of Shenandoah; her sister: Audrey and Virgil Andresen of Guthrie Center; her sister-in-law: Clara Sorensen of Arcata, Calif.; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
