Elmer Michael Steffes, son of Frank and Catherine (Sibenaller) Steffes was born on Nov. 18, 1936 at Templeton,. He passed away on Monday, April 3, 2017, at the age of 80 years, 4 months, 17 days.
His early life was spent growing up near Templeton where he attended Sacred Heart High School, graduating with the Class of 1954. Elmer was the valedictorian of his class of 12. After graduation, he joined the National Guard and also worked on the railroad and the meat locker.
On Feb. 15, 1958, Elmer was united in marriage to Patricia Ann Klocke at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Dedham. To this union four children were born, Daryl, Kay, Steve and Bruce.
In 1965, the family moved to a farm near Audubon, where Elmer was able to put his love of farming to work. Elmer was able to farm for about 15 years before the farm crisis of the eighties hit. Through this crisis Elmer found his second love, driving over the road, for North America Movers and for a short time drove for an agent out of Montana. In 1985, Elmer and Pat bought their own North America Franchise and moved to Spencer. Mostly through their business, Elmer was able to visit all 50 states and drove to and through all the lower 48 states and Alaska also.
Elmer was a member of the Knights of Columbus and was active in the Catholic churches in all the communities they lived, namely Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Templeton and St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Audubon. Elmer's two loves besides, Pat, were farming and trucking… those two things defined his life. He also enjoyed gardening as an extension of his farming. Later in his life, Elmer took up cooking and enjoyed preparing dishes for himself and Pat.
Preceding Elmer in death were his parents; and his two sons, Daryl and Steve.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Patricia Steffes of Essex; daughter, Kay Steffes of Essex; son, Bruce Steffes and his wife Deb of Audubon; three grandchildren Amanda, Adam and Gabe Steffes; other relatives and a host of friends.
