Esther attended elementary school in Muscatine, and Griswold, then graduated from the Guthrie Center High School in Guthrie Center, with the Class of 1950. Esther studied at the Iowa Teacher's College in Cedar Falls, where she received her Teaching Endorsement. Later she completed her Bachelor of Arts Degree and her Master's Degree from Drake University in Des Moines.
On June 20, 1951, she was united in marriage to Walter Mark Severin at the Christian Church in Cedar Falls. They were blessed with two daughters Lorilyn and Sherilyn. They lived on the farm until 1998 then purchased a condo in Atlantic. During the winters they would travel to their home in Texas. In 2010 they moved to the Heritage House and later moved to the Health Care Center in 2013.
