George D. Kauffmann (1921 - 2009)

A celebration of life for Geroge D. Kauffman, 88, of West Des Moines, will be held at a later date.
George was born Sept. 17, 1921 in Audubon to Henrietta (Jensen) Kauffman and George Kauffman, and died Sept. 26, 2009, at Kavanaugh House in Des Moines. He was the eldest of eight brothers and sisters.
At the age of 22, he volunteered for service and joined the Army Air Corp. He was selected for pilot training, earning his wings and raising to the rank of 1st Lieutenant. He piloted a B-26 Marauder on 59 successful missions over Germany and Italy. Upon returning home, George enrolled at the University of Iowa and graduated in 1950. He returned to Audubon in 1956 and married Susan J. Allard McLeran. George's career in mens clothing included Jensen's Clothing, Van Heusen, Kucharo's, Younkers downtown and most recently Younkers Valley West.
Preceding him in death, in addition to his parents, were a brother, Gordon and a sister, Phyllis Kness.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Susan J. Kauffman; two daughters: Belinda L. Green (Chris) of Des Moines; and Georgia S. Savage (Michael) of Greeley, Colo.; his grandchildren, Adam Green, Cody Stone (Jeff), Joseph Savage, both of Colorado; and Ryan Shade (Brandon) of Oklahoma; six-great-grandchildren, three brothers: Clark "Sam" Kauffman and Charles "Chuck" Kauffman, both of Audubon and Douglas of Estherville; two sisters: Lois Kness of Des Moines and Charlotte Fett of Vinton; two aunts, nieces, nephews and cousins.
