Gerald Lee Simmons, 79, was born in Wakarusa, Kan., to Leroy and Ruth (Satzler) Simmons on May 8, 1937 and passed away Sunday, March 12, 2017 at the Guthrie County Hospital, at the age of 79 years, surrounded by all his beloved family.
At the age of three, Gerald and his family moved to Hamlin where he walked to grade school.  For high school, he attended Audubon High, where he graduated in 1956. After schooling, Gerald worked as a carpenter in Audubon for a couple of years. On July 27, 1958, he was united in marriage to Betty Rudolph at the Coon Rapids Christian Church. To this union, they were blessed with four children. He worked for a farmer in Coon Rapids for just a short while. In 1960, they moved to Guthrie Center, where Gerald started work at Oscar Meyer for the next 25 years. After Oscar Meyer, Gerald started work at Country View Estates, where he was employed up until his illness.
Gerald had many interests, but his most loved was his wood working, and making many community Christmas displays for the city park. He loved to keep a close eye on his Gelbvieh cattle, watch for eagles in the sky, and hunt and fish behind his house! His grandchildren were his world, and he followed them to all their activities. Gerald loved the outdoors, enjoying many days just sitting on the front porch, listening to the birds sing and watching deer in the yard. Nature was such an important part of his life, that a treasured collection included trees "smuggled" from all areas that the family vacationed, so that they always had a living memory to remind them of their travels. Gerald never knew a stranger. He loved to talk, if he had just met you for the first time he would know your family history by the time the conversation was done.
Gerald was preceded in death by his parents, step-mother, infant daughter Joyce, brothers Eugene, Marvin, and Willis, and sisters Phyllis and Louise.
Gerald is survived by his wife of 58 years, Betty; sons, Leroy (Brenda) Simmons of Casey, David (Nancy) Simmons of Guthrie Center; daughter, Teresa (Kendall) Kipp of Yale, and youngest son, Raymond Simmons of Guthrie Center. Gerald will be missed by his seven grandchildren; Tyler (Haley) Simmons of Madrid, Chris Simmons of Johnston, Kaylan Simmons of Casey, Paige (Jake) Kipp of Linden, Cassidy Simmons of Guthrie Center, Walker Kipp, and Heidi Kipp of Yale, plus many other relatives and friends.
Memorials may be left to discretion of the family.
