Funeral Services for Inez Peckumn, 84, were held on Thursday, March 13, 2014 at 11 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Bayard. Pastor Charlene Wolfe, officiating. Honorary casket bearers were her great-grandchildren: Zayley Martin, Zephiniah 'Frankie' Martin, Zara Martin and Jack Wiskus. Casket bearers were her grandchildren: Christine (Neil) Shah, Thomas (Jessica) Peckumn, Benjamin Peckumn, Nicole Peckumn, Stephanie (Andrew) Wiskus, Jeremiah Martin, Jessica Martin and Andy Martin. Interment was in the Highland Township Cemetery in Bayard.
Inez Marie daughter of J. Mads and Emma (Jensen) Andersen, was born Jan. 16, 1930 in Audubon. She grew up on the farm northwest of Audubon and attended rural school through the eighth grade. In 1948 she graduated from Audubon High School. Three years later she graduated from St. Anthony School of Nursing. She started working as a registered nurse at the Carroll Medical Center in Carroll.
On July 1, 1952, Inez was united in marriage with John Maurice Peckumn. To this union five children were born. She was a homemaker and also worked as an RN at the Guthrie County Hospital for 12 ½ years and the Bayard Care Center for a short time. Inez was an active member of the United Methodist Church in Bayard, teaching Sunday school and serving as chair of the Supportive Committee for twelve years. She was also a member of the Help U Club for many years, the Bayard American Legion Auxiliary, Bayard Busy Quilters and the Coon Valley Amateur Radio Club. Inez enjoyed all kinds of sewing, quilting and crocheting. She always had a large garden and raised beautiful flowers. She took pleasure in being outdoors, even mowing the yard. After her husband's death in 1996, Inez remained on the farm south of Bayard for another year before moving into Bayard.
Inez was diagnosed with cancer, underwent treatment and her family was looking forward to her coming home. However, her health continued to decline. She died on Sunday, March 9, 2014, at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines, at the age of 84 years, 1 month and 21 days.
Preceding her in death are her parents; in laws; husband; and sister Helen Weber.
Inez is survived by her children: Jerry Peckumn of Jefferson; Bill Peckumn of Bayard; Patti Edwardson of Jefferson; Mark Peckumn of Jefferson and Jane Peckumn of Lake City; eight grandchildren; four great grandchildren; sister Wynona (Everett) Wendt of Audubon and other relatives and friends.
