James A. Hopson, 71, of Sun City, Ariz. passed away Jan. 24, 2011 at the Boswell Hospital.

He previously lived in Iowa where he graduated from Exira High School in 1957 and received a B.S. degree from Iowa State University in 1968. He was associated with the Iowa State University Alumni Association where he became the Executive Director from 1979-1999. Upon his retirement, they moved to Sun City, Ariz.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 52 years, Judy (Fredrick) Hopson, daughter, Cindy Howe, both of Sun City, Ariz. His grandsons, Donnie Howe of Des Moines and Steve Howe of Cedar Falls. His sister Polly Bolack of Lake Placid, Fla. and step sister Hellen Persall Pell City, Ala. Cousin Debbie Meyers of Longmeadow, Mass. Brothers and sisters-in-law Royal and Shirley Bierbaum of Griswold, Gary and Jean Frederick of Marion. Colleagues, family and friends.
A memorial service will be held on April 30 at 11 a.m. in the ISU Alumni Center, 420 Beach Ave., Ames, Iowa 50010. In keeping with the wishes of Jim, his family asked that memorials be directed to the ISU Alumni Association and earmarked for the Alumni Volunteer Recognition, Student and Young Alumni Engagement or the Alumni Center Endowment Fund. Gifts should be mailed to the Iowa State University Foundation, 2505 University Blvd., Ames, Iowa 50010.
