Lyle William Nelson, 90, was born Sept. 15, 1924 in Audubon to C.E. (Charlie) Nelson and Martha Nelson and died Nov. 20, 2014 in Sun City, Calif. He graduated form Audubon High School in 1942. A short time later he was drafted into the U.S. Army. After testing he was sent to Officers' Candidate School at Stanford. From there he was sent to Okinawa, where he serviced and repaired Army trucks and other vehicles.
Following the war, Lyle attended Iowa State College in Ames, taking mechanical engineering classes. Later he followed the rest of the family to California, where he took jobs in machine shops and took night classes at U.S.C. on the G.I. Bill. He graduated with honors from U.S.C. He worked at North American Aviation for a time. Years later he started his own machine shop in Hawthorne, and later in Torrance, Calif.
Lyle is survived by a sister Shirley Nelson Johnson and several nieces and nephews.
