A celebration of Life Service for Mark T. Jensen 61, of Ames was held at St. Andrew's Lutheran Church in Ames. Internment was at St. Andrew's Lutheran Church Columbarium. Grandon Funeral and Cremation Care of Ames was in charge of the arrangements.
Mark Thomas Jensen was born Dec. 12, 1950 to Marvin and Jean Jensen of Audubon. He was raised on a farm in Audubon County where he found his love for science. He participated in school choir, drama productions and piano lessons. He took various projects to the Des Moines Register Hawkeye Science Fair while in high school until he graduated in 1969.
He then attended Iowa State University and was an active member of University Lutheran Church. He enjoyed making wine and altar hangings for the church. He also participated in biochemistry club, science and humanities counsel, and dorm activities. Mark graduated with a BA in microbiology in 1973 and received his Master's degree in Immunology (biochemistry and biophysics.)
On Sept. 1, 1972, he was united in marriage to Lynnette Doolittle of Huron, S.D. They were active members of St. Andrew's Lutheran Church of Ames. Mark served as treasurer, sang in the choir, led men's bible study, ran and supported the sound system, supported the Tanzania Ministry Team, and ran the podcast portion of the church's website. Mark worked at the National Animal Disease Center, he was a stay-in-school student. He continued to work there for 30+ years as a microbiologist, a chemical safety officer and certified industrial hygienist.
He taught as a professor in the Industrial Education curriculum at Iowa State University and was the coeditor of the Songer Safety bibliography. He enjoyed his pet cats and geese, coin collecting, web-page design, folk music, cooking, traveling, reading, photography, audio-visual recording, cider and wine making. Mark was Assistant Boy Scout master for BSA Troup 140.
Mark was preceded in death by his father, Marvin Jensen; his brother-in-law, Greg Baldwin.
He and Lynnette are proud parents of Meleah Jensen Schneider and her husband John, Nick Jensen and Chelsea Jensen. He treasured his granddaughter, Grace Schneider. He is also survived by his mother Jean Jensen of Audubon; sisters Terri (Bob) Dobratz of Brooklyn Park Minn.; Patty and Bob Kohnen of Holt Summit, Mo.; and his brother, Mitchell and Melinda Jensen of Elkhorn, Neb., nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Mark will be remembered for how he went out of his way to serve others.
