Maxine Lamont Clausen, 97, died on Oct. 19, 2015 at Israel Family Hospice House in Ames. In keeping with Maxine's wishes, cremation and a private family celebration of life will be at a later date.
Maxine was born Jan. 13, 1918, to Ruth and Eugene Porter at their farm home near Exira. She graduated from Exira High School in 1935 after a few years of farm life in South Dakota. Her sister, Lucille, was born in 1921; and brother, Richard, in 1931. Maxine taught in a one-room schoolhouse near Exira for two years. Maxine married Charles Clausen on Feb. 14, 1943, in Exira in her parent's parlor. The newlyweds lived in Army Air Corps bases until 1944. After the war, they moved to Burbank, Calif., where they had three children, Karen, Roger, and Philip. Maxine and Charles moved back to Exira to raise their children.
In 1967, they moved to San Jose, Calif., where Maxine was a letter carrier for 15 years. Upon retirement, they moved to McKinleyville in northern California, where Maxine made many friends in 26 years. In 2012, Maxine returned to Iowa to live with her son, Philip, and his wife. She was a joy to know, and her sense of humor remained bright even to the last day of her life.
Maxine was preceded in death by Lucille, Charles, and Roger.
Survivors include her brother, Richard (Dorothy) Porter, of Le Mars; her children, Karen Amaral, of Longmont, Colo., and Philip Clausen of Ames; granddaughter, Megan Amaral, of Longmont, Colo.; grandsons, Pete (Tanya) Clausen, of Ames; Jeffry (Autumn) Clausen, of Tucson, Ariz; and Troy (Sara) Clausen, of Nevada; along with their children.
