Melvin L. Petersen of Burlington N.C. passed away peacefully in his sleep on October 17, 2017 from a sudden illness. He was 81 years old.
Melvin was born in Audubon, on August 31, 1936 to Bernice Viola Sogard Petersen and Hans Peter Petersen. Mel graduated from Audubon High School in 1954 and served in the United States Air Force from 1954 thru 1958. Melvin and Estelle were married on Dec. 6, 1958 in Ardmore, Okla. He later graduated from Northrop Institute of Technology with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Aeronautical Engineering in 1961.
Mel had been a very active member in the Twin Lakes Community since moving in March 2014. He was the current Auxiliary Club President, involved in several events and projects as well as organizing the Twin Lakes Annual Crop Walk event. He thrived in the Twin Lakes Community and loved being a part of it. He was well respected and a great friend of many residents at Twin Lakes.
Mel was an active church member of Macedonia Lutheran for 15 years. He was also very involved in their previous community of Mill Creek as the President of the Mill Creek HOA, Chair of the Architecture Committee and many other community boards. He worked in the semiconductor industry for 36 years in production, engineering as well as sales and marketing. The last 20 years of his career he was senior management in sales and marketing at RCA, GE and Harris Corporations.
Mel loved to play golf, read and exercise. Together Mel and Estelle traveled frequently to many places such as Machu Picchu Peru, Amazon Rain Forest, Russia, Galapagos Island, Ireland, France, England, Hawaii and many other locations. He was an avid proponent of Kidney Transplantation since receiving his own Kidney Transplant in Feb 2009. Polycystic Kidney Disease has played a dominant role in the Petersen family.
Melvin is survived by his wife Estelle Petersen of Burlington N.C.; daughter Sharon (Douglas) Vassello of Hillsborough N.C.; grandchildren Sarah Vassello and Nick Vassello of Hillsborough N.C.; grandchildren David Petersen, Jr. and Shanna Petersen of Hammonton N.J.; brothers Clifton (Monica) Petersen and Larry (Phyllis) Petersen both of Audubon.
Melvin is preceded in death by his daughter Michele M. Petersen, son David M. Petersen and brother Robert J. Petersen.
The Memorial Service is scheduled for Saturday October 28th at 1 p.m. at Foley Chapel in the Twin Lakes Community in Burlington, N.C. Reception to follow at the Pepper Tree Café in Twin Lakes. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Melvin's life.
