Samuel Newell Obituary

Funeral services for Samuel J. Newell, 87 of Jefferson, were held Monday, Aug. 10, 2009 at 2 p.m. at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Jefferson. Rev. David Simonson provided the words of comfort. Interment was in the Jefferson Cemetery in Jefferson. Military Graveside Rites were provided by the American Legion Floyd Brown Post #11 and Jefferson V.F.W. Post #9599. Taps by Peggy Semke and Wayne Lautner. Honorary casket bearers were the grandchildren: Danny Moranville, Denise Moranville, Mark Fountain, Heather Fountain, Jenn Staley, Nathan Raaz, Collin Raaz, Dillon Raaz, Mistie Schau, Chad Turner, Rachel Newell, Brittany Newell, Darin Newell, Samantha Bergemann, Kyle Bergemann and Chas Bergemann. Casket bearers were Dick Moranville, Danny Moranville, Dave Fountain, Jerry Raaz, Gary Turner and Curt Bergemann. The Slininger-Rossow Funeral Home in Jefferson was in charge of the arrangements.

Samuel Joseph Newell, son of Charles Sherman and Clara Anna Wiley Newell, was born July 7, 1922 at his parent's home in Lincoln Township, Audubon County. He died Aug. 6, 2009 at Regency Park in Jefferson at the age of 87 years, 29 days.

Sam attended rural schools in Lincoln Township in Audubon County. He then entered the United States Air Force where he was a Tail Gunner on a B17 during World War II. After being honorably discharged from the Air Force Sam returned and worked construction for several years.

On Aug. 27, 1949, Samuel was united in marriage to Marvel Bartley. To this union six children were born, Peggy, Linda, Julie, Deb, David and Diane. They then moved to Audubon County where they farmed the family farm.

In 1954, Sam and Marvel moved to Jefferson before moving to California in 1956. In 1959, they moved back to Jefferson where Sam worked for Hallett Construction until he retired in 1986.

Sam was preceded in death by his son David in 2006; his parents; brothers and sisters: Hazel Conrad, Alice (Julius) Winther, Robert (Margie) Newell, Lillian Newell, Albert (Marie) Newell, Raymond Newell, Ted Hall, Grace (Leonard) Phippen; Brothers and mother and father-in-law; Frank and Jo Bartley, Delores (Hap) Dennhardt, Duane Bartley, Gayle Bartley, Jean Wetzel and Rosemary Beaman.

He is survived by his wife Marvel Newell of Jefferson; his children: Peggy (Dick) Moranville of Jefferson, Linda (Dave) Fountain of Grand Junction, Julie (Jerry) Raaz of Iowa City, Deb (Gary) Turner of Jefferson, Diane (Curt) Bergemann of Jefferson; daughter-in-law: Colleen Newell of Jefferson; 16 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; his sister Helen Hall; sisters-in-law: Lois Newell of Arkansas, Evelyn (Dick) Leedom of Jefferson, Franky (Jim) Anderson of Jefferson; brothers-in-law: August Conrad of Audubon, Paul (Joy) Bartley of Boone, Dick Beaman of Jefferson; many nieces, nephews other relatives and many friends.
