Funeral services for Stanley S. Hansen, 89, were conducted by Pastor Dan Hawn at 10:30 a.m. at the First Baptist Church in Harlan on Friday, April 13, 2012. Serving as casket bearers were Randy Nelson, John Gilliland, Rowly Burton, Bob Burton, Keith Fiscus, and Paul Nelson. Military rites were performed by Shelby County VFW Post No. 941 and Harlan American Legion Helmer Reyelt Post No. 150 at Merrill's Grove Cemetery in Fiscus. The Pauley Jones Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Stanley Soren Hansen was born on Dec. 19, 1922 to Andrew and Karen (Andersen) Hansen in Jefferson Township near Irwin in Shelby County. He attended country school at Douglas #3 in Audubon County. He joined the Army and went to Camp Roberts, Calif.
After his honorable discharge, he returned home to farm with his father and worked as a hired man for other area farmers.
On May 8, 1946, he was united in marriage to Geraldine Young. Four children were born to them: Roger, Richard, Victor, and Janice.
In 1953, they moved to a farm northeast of Kimballton. In addition to farming, he did odd jobs and lawn care. He was assistant caretaker of the Harlan Cemetery. He enjoyed taking care of the Fiscus Cemetery and was proud of the way it looked.
He was a soft-hearted man and liked to help other people whenever he could, especially when his neighbors needed help with mowing or anything at their homes.
Stanley and Geraldine moved to Harlan, in 1981 and traveled together to Denmark, North Carolina, California, and the Black Hills.
After Geraldine's death last year, Stanley continued to be a resident of Salem Lutheran Home in Elk Horn. He was recently admitted to Myrtue Medical Center in Harlan where he died on Tuesday, April 10, 2012, having attained the age of 89 years, 3 months, and 22 days. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Geraldine, son Richard, brother Victor and sister Naomi Steen.
Stanley is survived by his children: Roger Hansen and his wife JoAnn of Atlantic, Vic Hansen and his wife Barb of Shelby, N.C., and daughter Janice and her husband Paul Scott of Coon Rapids; 12 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; other family members and friends.
