A joint memorial service for Sue, 65, and Frank Derby 76, was held at 1 p.m. on Thursday, July 17, 2014 at the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Carroll with Pastor Mark Peterson Chaplain of Gentiva Hospice officiating.  Burial was held at 3 p.m. on Friday, July 18, 2014 in the Exira Cemetery.  Arrangements are under the direction of the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Carroll.   
Sue Ellen Derby, age 65, of Carroll and formerly of Exira, passed away on Friday, July 11, 2014 at the Carroll Health Center Nursing Home in Carroll.
Born on Dec. 12, 1948, she was the daughter of Mack and Corinne (Nissen) Smith.   She grew up in the Brayton – Exira area and graduated from Exira High School in 1967.  Following high school she attended the University of Northern Iowa.  Sue was a homemaker and she co-owned and operated a consignment store called Twigs in Exira.  She was married to Frank Derby on Aug. 3, 1985 at the Exira Lutheran Church.  Frank and Sue moved to Panora in 2005 and to Carroll in 2013.  They were members of the Exira Lutheran Church.  Sue enjoyed spending time outdoors, decorating her home, gardening, and spending time with her grandchildren.  She was an avid Iowa State Cyclones fan.  Sue was hospitalized two days after the death of her husband Frank on May 18, 2014 and then made her home at the Carroll Health Center.
Sue is survived by a son Zach Wheeler of Carroll; a daughter Lindsay Riesberg of Carroll; four grandchildren: Kyle Wheeler of Omaha, Neb., Hayden Riesberg, Rhyan Riesberg, and Dane Riesberg all of Carroll; three step-children: Jeff Bauer and his wife Sandy of Exira, Jon Bauer of Anita, and Joni Bauer (David) of California; two step-grandchildren: Jeff Bauer Jr. of Des Moines, and Alex Bauer of Atlantic; three sisters: Jill Larsen,  Joy Wheeler,  and Jan Rasmussen all of Exira; and three sisters-in-law: Diane Derby of Harlan, Peg Derby of Ocala, Fla., and Janice Palmer and her husband Tom of Kirkland, Wash.;  and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Sue was preceded in death by her parents, a daughter Shannon Wheeler, a step-granddaughter Amanda, and her husband Frank Derby.
