Funeral services for Vern W. Jensen, 91, were conducted by Rev. Dr. Ronald Yarnell on Thursday, August 2, 2012, at 2 p.m. at the Kessler Funeral Home in Audubon. Interment was in the Maple Grove Cemetery in Audubon. Honorary casket bearers were Grover and Rosalie Davis. The casket bearers were Jerome Jensen, Jim Turner, Terry Baier, Brian Bauer, Bryan (Barney) Baier, Richard Johnston, Wayne Moreland, and Craig Owen. The Kessler Funeral Home in Audubon was in charge of the arrangements.
Vern Woodrow Jensen, the son of Lauritz and Christena M. Nielsen Jensen was born Nov. 29, 1920, at his parents' home west of Audubon, and died July 29, 2012 at the Friendship Home in Audubon, at the age of 91 years and 8 months.
Vern was baptized and confirmed at the Ebenezer Lutheran Church west of Audubon. While growing up he attended Bible School at Ebenezer Lutheran Church and was a member of the last class which was taught in the Danish Language. He attended rural school west of Audubon. At the age of 16, he moved into Audubon and was employed by Peter Frederiksen. During the summers Vern would operate a combine and follow the Wheat Harvest then would return to work at Peter Frederiksen's Shop. Vern did this from 1946 to 1958.
On Sept. 24, 1950, he was united in marriage to Marie Anna Bush at her mother's home in Audubon. One son, Lee, was born to this union. In 1958, Vern opened his own welding and machine shop and named it Southside Welding. He operated the business until he retired in 2003. During his retirement he enjoyed having coffee at the Chatterbox Café and then would go to the Welding Shop and have coffee there. Vern and Marie enjoyed traveling especially to Oklahoma, Wyoming, California, and Denmark. Vern enjoyed following the stock market and reading the Wall Street Journal every day.
Vern was a member of the Ebenezer Lutheran Church west of Audubon. He was a member of the Audubon Chamber of Commerce and Vern and Marie received the Citizen of the Year Award in 1997.
Vern was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers and sisters: Carrie Cook, Fred Jensen, Harold Jensen, Lillie Albildtrup, Lorena McArtor, and Esther Jensen; and his brother-in-law Phillip O. Bush.
He is survived by his wife Marie A. Jensen of Audubon; his son Lee and wife Linda Jensen of Audubon; his grandchildren: Brenda and husband Jim Turner; Jerome and wife Hope Jensen all of Audubon; Valerie Chambers of Audubon and friend Brian Bauer and his daughter Macey of Exira; his great-grandchildren: Kenedee Turner, Jasmine Turner, Gwen Jensen, Audrey Jensen, Jocelyn Chambers, and Corbin Vern Chambers all of Audubon; his step-grandson Chris Turner of Lansing, Mich.; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
