Wylma Rose Layland, the daughter of Soren and Julia (Christensen) Rattenborg, was born March 26, 1925, at her parents' home in rural Audubon, and died Jan. 31, 2017, at the Exira Care Center in Exira, at the age of 91 years, 10 months, and 5 days.
Wylma was baptized and confirmed at the Methodist Church in Audubon. She attended rural school at Luckett's Grove and then Viola High School. After school, Wylma moved to Omaha, Neb., where she was a spot welder at the Martin Bomber Plant in Bellevue, Neb. She returned to Audubon following World War II.
On June 2, 1946, she was united in marriage to Robert D. Layland at the Methodist Parsonage in Audubon. They were blessed with two sons, Terry and Michael. Wylma worked outside of her home most of her adult life and was still able to manage her home and raise two boys. Her employment included a number of local retail stores in Audubon, as well as owning and operating the Hi-Way Café with Bob for several years. She also had managed the clubhouse at the golf course, and later candled eggs for Parrott Produce. She became a custodian at the Junior High School in Audubon until her retirement in 1990.
Wylma enjoyed socializing with people. She loved to play cards and drink coffee with her many friends. At family gatherings you would find Wylma with her camera taking photos. She enjoyed compiling her photos and newspaper clippings into albums for others to enjoy. Wylma and Bob were past members of the Audubon County Travelers Club, and they loved to camp. During the summers they spent most weekends at Swan Lake in Carroll County. Above all, Wylma enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Wylma was preceded in death by her husband Robert D. Layland; her son Michael Layland; her infant great-grandson Samuel Kurtz; her parents; her sisters: Doris Andersen, Virginia and husband Connor Sheets, Kathleen and husband Max Luke; her brother-in-law Melvin Layland; and her sister-in-law Leona and husband Myron Harris.
