BARTOW, Ga. - Durden- Hudson Funeral Directors announces the death of Dr. J. Harold Harrison, age 86, of Bartow, GA on Saturday, June 02, 2012 at his residence. Funeral services will be Tuesday, June 5, 2012 at 1:00 PM in the Peebles- Curry Memorial Chapel with Rev. Dr. Marty McLain presiding. Interment will be in Westview Cemetery in Wrightsville, GA The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 9:30 AM to 11:30 AM prior to the service. Pallbearers are Mike Bryan, Will Kittle, Marty McLain, Keith Hall, Adam McNeely and Sam Harrison. Honorary Pallbearers are Hogarth Sandford, Dudley Gunn, Mutt Kennedy, Frank Griffen, Gaylen Richmond, Jim Osborne and Grover Cobb Dr. Harrison was born in Kite, GA served as a Captain in the US Army and went on to become a pioneer in the field of cardiovascular surgery. In a career that spanned over fifty years, Dr. Harrison developed the nation's first vascular training program at St. Joseph's Hospital in Atlanta in 1959. He was also instrumental in developing procedures that helped shape the vascular surgery specialty. Dr Harrison preformed over 7000 operations on blocked neck arteries throughout his career and served as St. Joseph's Chief of Surgery until retiring in 1999. During his distinguished career, Dr. Harrison was recognized with numerous outstanding awards. In 2007, the vascular unit at St. Joseph's Hospital was named after him. Dr. Harrison attended the University of Georgia and was a graduate of the Medical College of Georgia. He interned at the Medical College of Virginia and completed his residency training at Grady Hospital in Atlanta, GA. Upon retirement, Dr. Harrison remained heavily involved and generously donated both his time and money to the University of Georgia, Medical College of Georgia, The MCG Foundation and Alumni Association, of which he served as Past President of both. He was also able to focus more of his time and efforts on his other passions - his family, farming and Georgia Bulldog football. He was preceded in death by his parents; James and Geneva Harrison of Kite, GA, sister; Jackie Harrison Bryan of Augusta, GA and brother; Hughel Harrison of Lawrenceville, GA Survivors include: His Wife of 17 years: Sue W. Harrison of Bartow, GA ; One Sister: Mahalah Harrison (Wayne Bland) of Evans, GA; One Step-Daughter: Stephanie McLain (Marty) of Douglasville, GA; One Step-Son: Scott Fitzgerald (Missy) of Evans, GA; Seven Grandchildren: Virginia, Masey, Marty and Stephen McLain of Douglasville, GA and Sidney, Harrison and Phillip Fitzgerald of Evans, GA; Four Nieces: Mary Robbins (Andy) of Evans, GA, Dr. Jenny Burdette (David) of Augusta, GA, Liza Kittle (Bill) of Martinez, GA and Emily King (Dan) of Evans, GA Two Nephews: Sam Harrison (Peggy) of Lawrenceville, GA and Mike Bryan of Augusta, GA.; Sister-In-Law: Leslie P.
