James Neal

TWIN CITY, Ga. - Durden-Hudson Funeral Directors announces the death of Mr. James Albert Neal, age 92, of Twin City, GA. on Wednesday, March 6, 2013, at his residence after an extended illness. Graveside services will be Saturday, March 9, 2013 at 11:00 AM in the Antioch Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery with Rev. Franklin Sasser officiating and Military Honors. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Friday evening from 6-8 PM. Pallbearers are Anthony Frost, Tim Kea, Trojan Harrison, Johnny Johnson, Tommy Neal, Neal Mathis, Albert Jones and Hank Evans. Honorary Pallbearers will be Jerry Moore, Roy Sikes, John William Turner, Loren Williamson, Melvin Mathis, Hank Mullis, Bud Hall, Madelyn Hall, George Hall, Johnson Turner, David Price, James Johnson, Alvie Faulkner, Flenton Faulkner, William Andy Anderson, Bil Jines, Staten Sellers, Billy Brown, Walter E. Coleman and William Bill Jones. WWII veteran Mr. James Albert Neal was drafted into the US Army Air Force on Sept 14, 1942. After receiving gunnery training in Laredo, TX was transferred to Amarillo, TX where he attended air craft mechanics School, then went to Salt Lace City, UT in June of 1943, when the 456th Bombardment Group (H) was activated along with 4 squadrons at Wendover Army Air Field. December 24, 1943 Mr. Neal and his crew departed for Italy by way of North Africa where he flew his first combat mission in 1944; flying with the 744th Bomber Squadron of the 456th Bomb Group of the 15th Air Force, he was a tail gunner on a B-24 Liberator when his plane was shot down and he spent eleven months as a POW in German captivity. Mr. Neal was released from the POW camp in April 1945 when the camp was liberated by General Patton's Army, he spent several months in recovery and was released from active duty in October of 1945. Returning home he then worked for the Fire department for more than 32 years and was Fire Chief for 25 years. In 1963 he joined the State Department of Civil Defense Auxiliary Police and was Owner/Operator of the Neals Service Station as well. He was preceded in death by his wife of 70 years, Mary Virginia Williamson Neal; parents, Ben H. and Lena Brantley Davis Neal; sisters, Gladys Neal Newman, Thelma Neal Joyner, Dorothy Neal Lanier and Louise Neal Dearing and brothers, Robert Neal, John Davis, Elmer Davis, Ben H. Neal Jr. and Lonnie Neal. Survivors include: Two Daughters: Joyce Neal Harrison of Kite, GA and Margaret Neal Webb of Metter, GA; One Son: James Franklin Jimmy Neal (Donna) of Twin City, GA; One Sister: Lenez Neal McLendon of Twin City, GA; Six Grandchildren: Dickie Trojan Harrison (Tina) of Kite, GA, Tammy Harrison Sasser (Franklin) of Garfield, GA, Timothy Allen Kea (Terri) of Metter, GA, Melissa Lynn Frost (Anthony) of Hephzibah, GA, Alice Neal Caudill (Payton) of Claxton, GA and Amy Neal Leatherwood (Jeremy) of Ft. Hood, TX, 16 Great- Grandchildren and 1 Great Great-Grandchild; Two Caregivers: June Ellen Clark and Angela Jones Condolences may be submitted on-line at www. durden-hudsonfuneraldirectors.com.
