SAN ANTONIO, Texas - Colonel Charles Barry Long, 68, died on Thursday, May 28, 2015. He fought a great and brave battle against cancer.
A native of Charlotte, NC, he was the son of the late Charles B. Long and Lorene D. Long, born on July 29, 1946.
They moved to the North Augusta, SC area in 1956 and were members of Grace United Methodist Church. Barry grew up in the North Augusta area. He later graduated from North Augusta High School and then went on to graduate from the University of South Carolina in Columbia, SC. He retired from the U.S. Air Force with 30 years of service as a Colonel. Then he worked several years in the private sector of business. His friends said Barry had a smile, quick wit and a great sense of humor.
He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Barbara Medcalf Long; brother to Michael and Jo Long, who reside in North Augusta, SC; brother-in-law, Dr. Michael and Donna Medcalf, who reside in Greenville, S.C.; three sons, Major (retired) David and Jody Long, who reside in Beaver Creek, Ohio, Michael and Kelly Long, who reside in Kellar, Texas, and Scott Long, who resides in Fort Worth, Texas; five grandsons, Cameron Long and Ryan Long from Beaver Creek, Ohio, Mason Long, Caleb Long and Brady Long from Kellar, Texas; and a number of nieces and nephews, including Victoria and Denise Long from North Augusta, SC, Brad and Abbey Medcalf from Greenville, SC and several great-nieces and nephews.
The family will be receiving friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Thursday at Porter Loring North Funeral Home in San Antonio, TX.
A memorial service will be held at 1:45 p.m. on Friday at the Cemetery in Fort Sam Hood with full military honors for Colonel Barry Long.
