AUGUSTA, Ga. - Mrs. Bernice Boots Wittenberg entered into rest Tuesday, February 3, 2015. Boots was born in Philadelphia, PA in 1928 and came to Augusta with her husband Mort after he completed his Podiatry Education in Chicago, IL in 1951. Since her arrival she was an active volunteer in the Augusta community. She was a member of the Walton Way Temple Congregation Children of Israel, served as President of the Sisterhood and was a member of Hadassah. She was also on the Board of the Jewish Community Center at various times through the years. Boots had also served as President of the Evergreen Garden Club, the Augusta Council of Gardens Clubs, Inc., Director of the Azalea District of the Garden Club of Georgia and a board member of the Garden Club of Georgia, Inc. She served on the board of the Augusta Opera Association, the Opera Club, was a member of the Augusta-Richmond County Museum and the Gertrude Herbert Institute of Art. Boots had served as vice president and president of the American Podiatric Medical Association Auxiliary and was president of the Garden Arts Club of Augusta. She served as campaign chairman and president of the Women's Division of the Augusta Jewish Federation and was the first female to direct the UJA Federation annual fund raising campaign for the Augusta Jewish Federation. Boots has served as a member of the Board of the Council of Jewish Federations and was a member of the SE Regional Board of the United Jewish Appeal, currently known as United Jewish Communities. Boots has been on many UJA missions to Europe and Israel, with the Women's Division as well as the Southeast Region, Patriots Mission. She was a member of the 1993 UJA/Federation National Campaign Cabinet, Women's Division. Boots and her husband were honored in September of 1985 with the Israel City of Peace Award given by the Augusta Israel Bond Organization for Devotion to the Jewish Community and the People of Israel. She continued to be a homemaker, avid traveler both nationally and internationally, but found time to serve again as President of the Women's Division, Augusta Jewish Federation during the 2001 Campaign year. She was honored in May of 2001 with Maurice Steinberg Achievement Award by Augusta Jewish Federation along with her husband for continuous community service and also the Augusta Jewish Community Humanitarian Award in 2009. Mrs. Wittenberg was preceded in death by her beloved son, Bart. Boots is survived by her husband, Mort; two children, Robyn Wittenberg Dudley from Charleston, SC, and Jon Wittenberg from Alpharetta, GA; three grandchildren, Sarah, Sean and Brian. Funeral services will be held 11AM, Thursday, February 5, 2015 at Congregation Children of Israel with Rabbi Robert G. Klensin officiating. Interment will follow at Westover Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be Dr. Louis Scharff MD, David Alalof, Dr. Kyle Kinney MD, Dr. Kent Kronowski, MD, Jack Goldenberg, Nathan Jolles, Sean Dudley and Elliot Price. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Congregation Children of Israel, 3005 Walton Way, Augusta, GA 30909.
