AUGUSTA, Ga. - Mrs. Betty Jane Lawton Marshall entered into rest Wednesday, April 27, 2016. Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, May 4, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. from Thankful Baptist Church, 302 Walker Street, Augusta, with Reverend Christopher J. Waters, pastor, officiating. Interment will be in Mount Olive Memorial Gardens. A native of Atlantic City, New Jersey, she was married to Willie George Marshall and to this union one daughter, Dianne Elizabeth was born. They both preceded her in death. At the age of twelve, she united with New Mount Zion Baptist Church in her home town of Orangeburg, South Carolina. She moved with her family to Augusta in 1960 and was a devoted and faithful member of Thankful Baptist Church for many years. During her tenure at Thankful, she served as Sunday School Teacher, Vacation Bible School Teacher, Senior Missionary Society and Trustee Board Member as well as pianist for the Junior Department of the Sunday School. In 1994 she affiliated with First Metropolitan Baptist Church where she served as pianist. She returned as a full time member of Thankful in 1995. Betty Marshall attended Marlboro County Elementary School, Bennettsville, SC; Claflin and Dunton Elementary Schools, Orangeburg, SC, Mark Twain Junior High and Commerce Senior High Schools, Yonkers, New York and Wilkinson High School Orangeburg, SC. She completed the requirements for the Bachelor of Science Degree at South Carolina State University and earned the Master of Education Degree from Georgia Southern University. She held clerical positions at South Carolina State College, Paine College and Fort Gordon. At Fort Gordon, she also served as Guidance Counselor for the United State Army's Education Division. She was a member of Zeta Xi Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. and South Carolina State University's Alumni Club. Betty Marshall gave freely of her love, time, and talents to help others to achieve. Following her retirement from Civil Service, she tutored at the Adult Literacy Center for Augusta Technical College. She received the Tutor of the Year Award in 1991. She is survived by her loving cousins, Mr. Cleveland Brown, Mrs. Rita Downing, Mrs. Johnnie Mae Booker, Mr. Daryl Brown and Mr. Todd Booker; and a God-Son, Josiah Davis, and many, many faithful friends.
