EVANS, Ga. - Mr. Burton M. Kunkel entered into rest Tuesday, December 9, 2014 after suffering a long illness. He was preceded in death by his parents, Pearl and Joseph Kunkel; sister-in-law, Renee Phares; and granddaughter, Rachel Amanda Johnson. Mr. Kunkel proudly served in the United States Army and in the Naval Reserves. He then spent 38 years as a civilian employee for the Department of Defense, where he received numerous certificates the Sustained Superior Performance. While living in New Jersey, Burton was the President and served on the state board of the Long Branch Knights of Pythias. He had lived in Augusta for 43 years and was a member of the Congregation Children of Israel and was on the Temple board for 13 years. Mr. Kunkel is survived by his devoted wife of 54 years, June Kunkel; daughter and son-in-law, Debra Kunkel (Milton) Johnson; son and daughter-in-law, Michael (Shelley) Kunkel; grandchildren, Patti and Jessica Johnson, Nathaniel, Samantha, Amanda, Noah and Joshua Kunkel and sister-in-law, Ann (Jay Rappaport) Geller. Graveside services will be held at 12 PM, Friday, December 12, 2014 at Hillcrest Memorial Park with Rabbi Robert G. Klensin officiating.
