Mr. Carroll Douglas Flakes of Hephzibah, GA, loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and uncle, died peacefully, surrounded by his beloved family, on Monday, January 2, 2017, at the age of 90.

He was born to parents Mariah and J.L. Flakes in Girard, GA, on February 1, 1926. He professed faith in Christ and has been a faithful member of Berlin United Methodist Church, where he served as an usher, for 57 years. He served his country honorably in the Korean War. A welder by profession, he was owner and operator of Flakes Repair Shop in Waynesboro, GA, where his unique skill to find, understand, and fix any problem served his friends and customers for over 35 years. Once he retired "Pa" could be found in his office/shed in the back yard where he prepared for yard work and kept and trained homeless cats who sensed his kind spirit and gladly accepted his affection and food. When he wasn't mowing the grass or tending his garden, he could be found sitting on the front porch or in his chair in the living room. Despite the scolding of his family and friends he would be spotted walking around working on the roof while a pile of freshly chopped wood sat for sale in the front yard up until the last year of his life. Inside the house he was never without his dogs; he has joined Buck and Blackie, while leaving Chipper behind for now. He united in marriage and spirit to Lucille Knight on December 16, 1950.

Besides Lucille Flakes of Hephzibah, GA, he is survived by one son and two daughters: Kenneth Flakes and his wife Yuni Flakes of Hephzibah, GA, Beverly Post and her husband Robert Post of Clarks Hill, SC, and Teresa Hayes of Greenville, SC; three grandchildren: Gina Flakes and her husband Thomas Falace of Lexington, KY, Sonya Padgett and her husband Alex Padgett of Evans, GA, and Lora Bohannon and her husband Rusty Bohannon of Grovetown, GA; three great-grandchildren: Ava and Ella Bohannon and Walter Padgett; two sisters: Faye Herrington of Waynesboro, GA, and Nell Black and her husband Sherrill Black of Waynesboro, GA; several nieces and nephews, many other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his four brothers and three of his sisters: Mrs. Dorothy McCullough, Mrs. Betty Oglesby, Mrs. Mildred Thompson, Mr. Palmer Flakes, Mr. Leroy Flakes, Mr. Jim Flakes, and Mr. John Flakes.

Visitation will be Saturday, January 7, 2017, from 11am-12pm and the funeral service will be at 12pm at Berlin United Methodist Church.

In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to Berlin United Methodist Church, 1518 Hephzibah-McBean Rd, Hephzibah, GA, 30815.
