PITTSBORO, N.C. - Mrs. Dena Eckman Speering, 94, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, February 21, 2015 at Pittsboro Christian Village. Her graveside service will be held at 1:00 PM on Thursday, February 26, 2015 in Westover Memorial Park with Ted Stephens officiating. Mrs. Speering's home church was Bethany Chapel. She became a missionary in 1948 and served in Africa for over 45 years. During her service in the Congo and Uganda, she ran an orphanage, operated a girls school, produced Sunday School material, established a school for pygmies, started a Bible correspondence school, offered baby clinics in multiple villages, and continued to translate Christian educational material into Swahili until she was 90. Her last project was revising the Swahili Bible. Survivors include her daughter, Marian Y. Snyder of North Augusta, SC; her sister, Betty Heinzelman of Anderson, SC; 4 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
