LOUISVILLE, Ga. - Reverend Lumpkin entered the presence of the Lord Wednesday, November 11, 2015, just a few weeks shy of his 85th birthday. He was the youngest of 11 children born to Paul and Leila Maybelle Lumpkin and is survived by his wife of 62 years, Joan Head Lumpkin, four children (David Lumpkin of Statesboro, Georgia; Sharon Tomlinson of Swainsboro, Georgia; Tim Lumpkin of Louisville, Georgia; and Russ Lumpkin of Evans, Georgia), 11 grandchildren, and ten great-grandchildren. He is a graduate of Tennessee Temple University. Reverend Lumpkin spent more than six decades in the service of the Lord, preaching primarily in small churches in and around his hometown of Rome, Georgia. In 1960, he took the full-time pastorship of Snow Springs Baptist Church in Adairsville, Georgia, then moved to Emerson Baptist in 1969. In 1971, Pastor Lumpkin and his family moved to Augusta, Georgia, where he served as associate pastor of Curtis Baptist before moving to Wadley Baptist in Jefferson County, Georgia, in '72. Seven years later, he became a pastor of Jackson First Baptist Church in Jackson, South Carolina, where he spent 16 years. In 1996, he returned to Jefferson County, where he had a short stint at Moxley Baptist, then spent more than 15 years at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in Avera. He retired from full-time preaching in 2012 at age 82, but continued to speak off and on as his health allowed. Tomlinson Funeral Home of Swainsboro, Georgia, is handling the arrangements. The viewing will be Friday, November 13, from 5 to 9 p.m., at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in Avera, Georgia. The funeral, also at Pleasant Grove, is Saturday, November 14, at 11 a.m.
