Doris Avery


SOPERTON, Ga. - Mrs. Doris Claxton Avery, age 87, of Soperton, died Saturday, July 23, 2016. Mrs. Avery was born in Treutlen County and was preceded in death by her parents, John Lewis Claxton, Sr. and Minnie Mae Johnson Claxton; her husband of sixty-four years, Hugh E. Avery, Sr.; her sisters, Mary Lois Wheeler and Johnnie Mae Lynn; and her brother, John Lewis Claxton, Jr. She lived in Soperton until moving to Augusta in 1952, where she spent most of her adult life before retiring to Soperton in 1992. She was a graduate of Brewton Parker College where she served as registrar while she was a student and was a graduate of Augusta College where she earned her B.A. and M.A. in Elementary Education. She retired from Gracewood Elementary School, Augusta, where she taught for twenty-three years and touched many young lives. She was a member of Treutlen County Retired Educators where she served as treasurer, was a life member of GAE and NEA, and volunteered with Treutlen County Bloodmobile where she received the Outstanding Volunteer Award in 2015. She was a member of First Baptist Church, Soperton, and the Fidelis Sunday School Class where she was past-president. Survivors include her children, Hugh E. Avery, Jr. and his wife, Elaine, and Edwin Avery and his wife, Cindi, all of Dublin; granddaughter, Blakely Avery Stephenson and her husband, Chance, of Eufaula, AL; great-grandson, Tucker Stephenson of Eufaula, AL; sisters-in-law, Lynette Drew of Demorest and Undine Fortner of Vidalia; brother-in-law, E. L. Avery, Jr. of Vidalia; special niece, Brenda Kordzikowski of Lyons and a host of other nieces and nephews; and special caregivers, Runell Smith and Kathey Wilson-Hill. Funeral services will be held in the Chapel of Sammons Funeral Home at 11 a.m., Wednesday, July 27, with Reverend George Grimes and Mrs. Kathey Wilson-Hill officiating.
