Mrs. Dorothy McNeil Mitchell entered into rest on March 31, 2017.

She was born and raised in Columbia, SC the youngest of eight children to the late Winford and Elizabeth (Myers) McNeil. She graduated from C. A. Johnson High School in 1958. She earned a Bachelor's Degree in Liberal Arts from Benedict College, pursuing a career in Early Childhood Education.

Dorothy had a long career in Education in the Georgia Public School System. She taught at Swainsboro Elementary School (Emanuel County), Evans Elementary School (Columbia County), and Harlem Middle School (Columbia County), where she retired.

Dorothy was married for over 50 years to her loving husband Herman R. Mitchell. Through this union they were blessed with two daughters. She and her family have been devout Catholics and active members of The Church of the Most Holy Trinity for more than 35 years. Dorothy's participation in the parish included the Eucharistic Ministry, the Parish Council of Catholic Women, and the Bereavement Ministry.

Dorothy and her family called Augusta home for over 45 years. She expressed her love for the community through active participation with Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority Inc. Delta Alpha Sigma Chapter, the Red Hat Society, and volunteering through Catholic Social Services.

Dorothy was preceded in death by three brothers, James, Gabriel, and Chester McNeil; and three sisters, Theresa Henagan, Mildred Calhoun, and Elizabeth Grigge.

She is survived by her husband, Herman R. Mitchell; her sister, Martha Bray; two daughters, Fonda and Sandy; one granddaughter, Chazmine; and two great grandchildren, Markez and Audrey.

Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be Saturday, April 8, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. from The Church of The Most Holy Trinity, 720 Telfair Street, Father Jacek Szuster, presiding priest. Interment will be in Bellevue Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends (today) from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home. W. H.
