AUGUSTA, Ga. - Mr. Elwin Richard Smith, 71, affectionately known as "Big Al" and "Smitty", beloved husband of seventeen years to Mrs. Kathleen "Kay" Hattaway Brooks Smith, entered into rest on Sunday, June 19th, 2016. Born in Rutland, VT and a resident of the CSRA for fifty years, he was a son of Winnie Geno Smith, Rutland, VT and the late Harry Smith. A Vietnam Veteran, he proudly served his country in the United States Army, where he was honorably discharged as a SP4. He retired from Kimberly Clark where he was a Machine Operator after thirty-three years of dedicated service. He was a very active and dedicated member of Clearwater First Baptist Church, where he was a member of the Swinging Sixties and where he would always and enjoyed, lending a hand in the kitchen. Al enjoyed cooking, gardening and took great pride in the appearance of his yard. In addition to his wife and parents, family members include his children, Tammy Reese, Augusta, GA, Rhodie Brooks Green (Harold) Clark Hill, SC, Pamela Brooks Grove (Charles) Boynton Beach, FL, David Brooks, Tavares, FL, Patricia Brooks Dukes (Curtis) Aiken, SC, Nancy Brooks, Boynton Beach, FL and the late Richard Smith, sister, Sherry Smith Tuttle, Charlesrtown, NH, nine grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. The family will greet friends on Wednesday, June 22nd, 2016, from 6 until 8 o'clock at Hatcher Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 3464 Jefferson Davis Hwy., Graniteville, SC. A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Thursday, June 23rd, 2016, at 3 o'clock at Clearwater First Baptist Church, Clearwater, SC, with Pastor Earl Carter officiating. Interment will follow in Hillcrest Memorial Park, Augusta, GA. Pallbearers will be Scott Brooks, Ron Brooks, Mark Brooks, Waylon Dykes, Christian Videtto, Aaron Hattaway and David Smith. Due to his love for his church, the family has asked that if you desire to do so, memorials may be made to Clearwater First Baptist Church.
